I did not understand the pros and cons to various video card coolers when purchasing PC in 2014. So right now I have an EVGA gtx 780 with the standard Nvidia blower style cooler.

My understanding is that this cooler is best suited for sli or cases with poor airflow.

I do not plan to go sli. Case is Corsair Obsidian 450d, and this mid-tower case has good reviews.

So, I think my next video card should use aftermarket cooling. I like the MSI and EVGA cooling systems. Is this a smart move for these circumstances?

Yep. Go with the blower coolers if you're short on space, trying to save cost, or going SLI. Otherwise the aftermarket stuff is almost always objectively better on temps and noise.
