My current setup has one 74gb raptor, two 250gb maxtors, and one 300gb seagate. The 300gb Seagate I got a couple months ago. Few days after plugging it in, I noticed SpeedFan SMART tab reported the fitness of the Seagate at 50%. Performance is at 100%. All other drives are 100% for both. Did I just get a bad drive?

Is there a better program I should use that will tell me more information about what's wrong with my drive? Should I RMA this thing sometime soon? I just don't want it to die on me... lots of backups and video recordings on this drive :(


also, I've been wondering what the difference between the 5 wire SATA PSU power connector, and the 4 wire SATA power adapters. Obviously the adapters don't have 3.3v, but does it really matter? What's the benefit of having 3.3v for hard drive?
edit: is there any difference between the molex connector or the SATA power adapter on drives that have both connectors?
 
I've got a seagate and it always reports fitness at like 70% IIRC, I think ive heard in places that the seagates always report the fitness low but its not a problem. I've had my seagate for at least two years and I havent had any problems what so ever with it.

About the adapter question, I dont really know, I've always used a PSU with the plug built into it, never used the adapter. I would guess its probably not a problem, but getting an updated PSU wouldnt be a bad idea either.

If the drive has a molex and a sata pwr connector, you can use either but NOT both.
 
Well I hope it's just not reporting it correctly. I ran the seagate diagnostic test and found no problems.

My PSU (OCZ powerstream 420) has two cables with two SATA power connectors on each. But my Raptor is at the top of the case and the other connector won't reach my seagate drive, so right now I'm just using the molex > SATA power adapter with the seagate. I could move things around, but if the regular PSU connector is not much different than the adapter, I don't think I will.
 
What version of Speedfan are you using? I was using an older one and it reported my brand new Seagate around 70%. They fixed that in the latest version, 4.28. Now my drive is reported at 100%. You might give it a try if you are using an older version.
 
I have 4.27. I'll try updating it sometime today, and probably try a different SMART reader too.

I tried SpeedFan 4.29, and drive is looking much better, and this was what the help file says about the seagate drives (known issue)
Starting with SpeedFan 4.28, fitness and performance overall indicators are computed using a more advanced structure. While 0% is still used when any relevant attribute reaches its threshold, the full range from 1% up to 100% uses a non-linear, multi-range, approach. This is the result of a statistical analysis of thousands hard disks. The owners of SEAGATE hard disks now should see less frightening values. Seagate uses an unusual strategy when presenting current values for some attributes, like "seek error rate", which leads to values ranging around 55. The new way used by SpeedFan to compute fitness and reliability derives from the online in-depth analysis.


so does anyone have an answer about the power adapter question? My friend wanted to know if he should use the SATA power adapter or just stick with a molex connector for power. Is there any benefit to using the SATA power ADAPTER? (it does not have 3.3v)

No difference between the SATA connector and the Molex or Molex adapter on current drives. They only pull on +5 and +12. Laptop drives pull on just +5. +3.3 is included on SATA power cables straight from PSUs for compatibility with future solid state devices.

If a given SATA drives has both the SATA connector and a Molex connector, use either/or, not both. The SATA connector is required for hot plug support, the Molex is less likely to fall out.
