My computers are all in this one room. It is on the second floor, and the floor is all carpet.

Should I either build my computers in the second floor, carpeted (and please tell me all the precautions I should take) or should I take the hassle to move everything downstairs then bring it all back up when I'm done? Even for small upgrades like adding RAM? (it's hardwood floor and I have a table as well, but... generally there isn't much room on first floor for PC building. I have a dog as well, so he tends to get in the way. The dinner table is fairly small, only three people usually eat there but can seat about six for special occassions)

Thanks! I want to be as safe as possible! :) (Without taking too many unnecessary precautions as well! :))

As long as you ground yourself before you touch anything important and don't move around alot you should be fine...

I havent had issues with working on carpet, I just take my socks off and ground myself on the case when I work.

If it's the dead of winter and static electricity is a problem, I just use a can of Static Guard and spray the area around my work area, my chair including the arms and my socks and pants legs and that takes care of the problem. Actually water works just as well, but doesn't last long enough. You can ground yourself out to the computer chasis every few minutes making sure that the power cord is still plugged in to the wall socket, or you can use a static wrist strap or a static mat...any of these procedures will stop ESD.

yes static wrap or just make sure you are continuously touching the case - and do not put any parts down on the carpet (yeah, yeah, I expect a "well duh") but many people forget...

If I lay out newspaper on the carpet then place PC components on that, is it okay?
