Should I wait for the X1800s?

Im building a new rig these days, and I have problems deciding what vidcard to get.

I always told myself Ill wait til the X1800 comes out, but the benchmarks Ive seen so far were not THAT impressive. Also, I will be gaming on a 20" widescreen LCD (Dell 2005), which has a native resolution of 1680x1050.
From what Ive read, nVidia cards perform better at high resolutions like this because of the higher pipelines. Is this true? Will the 7800GTX perform better than the X1800XT at this resolution?

If thats the case, Ill probably just get the 7800GTX now, and I wont have to wait for the R520 which is probably not hitting the shelves until late october.

By the way, no matter what vidcard I end up with, Im going to OC it as much as possible and watercool it.

Thanks for all kinds of input here.

What kind of system do you currently have? How long have you been waiting to upgrade?

Basically, if you've been waiting awhile, I guess you could wait a month if you really want to...I just bought my GTX the other day and got it in yesterday, and had no problem doing so. If the X1800 series pwns the 7800 series, all you have to do is sell your card, and then buy an ATi (if you can find one once they're out :p). I vote for getting a GTX now though, because the card is VERY powerful...I was extremely impressed with it, and I had a 6800 Ultra before. Yet to see it lag on anything game-wise.

You could wait for the x1800 to come out in October if you like it get it if not the prices might drop on the GTXs. If price doesn't matter that much to you buy a GTX now!

We'll I didnt wait.. I need some BF2... so I ordered the Evga KO :D

Hehe thanks guys. Ive been using a Voodoo laptop for the last year so Im really keen on getting a pwerful desktop, I just have not been able to until now. But I kind of need it right now, so it looks like Ill just go for the 7800GTX.

But do you think what I said about the 7800GTX performing better than X1800 at higher resolutions is true?

Thanks-

I think both companies' cards scale relatively the same with resolution, but we'll have to wait until the card's released to be sure. I mean, just for reference, I play Counter-Strike: Source most of the time as I run a CS:S community. I run 1280x1024 (LCD monitor) with 4x TR SSAA (the new-fangled AA called Transparent SuperSampling, you can run regular AA, but TR SSAA is hawt) and every setting on as high as it goes. With the v-sync off, I barely (I mean like, in only one map in one spot I've noticed) ever dip below 100fps...and it's usually 120fps+. Since I have that much overhead, I jsut turn on vsync now so it runs smooth and it never goes below 72fps, so you really can't beat that. ;)

From what I've read at Anand's it looks like it will be true, but only final hardware benchies will tell the full story.

I am not going to make any claims about the relative performance of the R520 and Nvidia's latest GPU. I will say this, however: ATI's new cards should be in the hands of most press, benchmarked and tested thouroughly, within the next couple weeks (if not sooner), and hopefully on the shelves soon after; then we will all know for sure. Might as well wait a little while and be certain before making such an expensive purchase....

How can you tell someone you agree when comparing to a card that is not availible and in the hands of the pubic.....

Yes - if you need the system NOW you dont have much choice - but if you can wait you were better off waiting, only good could of come out of it

1. GTX prices drop for competition
2. x18** is a better card

Either way it is a win win for you.

Get a 7800GTX.

Not only would you have to wait for the 1800, you would also have to wait for the drivers to even out.

I would wait, if you're gonna throw down the cash for a new card it would be advantageous to check out the x1800 since it's coming soon.

The X1800's are right around the corner. Only another month or so. I say wait it out, and see how they do and then base your decision. And dont let the people who say it only has 16 pipes get to you, since 16 pipes dont mean much these days.

7800gtx is still a LOT of card. more than u can actually use right now so wtf? why wait? if the ati owns it sell the 7800 for 50-70 less than u paid for it no big deal. I had a 7800 and got a 850xt pe b/c my projector only does 1024x768 so the gtx was the same thing as the ati fps wise.

i would have waited...considering it is around the corner...its a bit sill not waiting but well every mans patience has its limits...and if the new ati cards own the gtx...then just consider that youve been gaming for 2-3 months with the best card out lol...

I'd wait... See what the new ATi cards can do. It might bring down the prices of the GTX etc.
And maybe... just maybe. The X1800XT might just pwn the 7800GTX. But its looking very unlikely :p

But I would still wait if I was you :D

Why in God's name would you use a 7800GTX @ 1024x768? You pay for a card that fast so you can raise the res to enhance image quality while still having playable framerates. If 1024x768 is your bag, just get a 9800 Pro or something.

Well thanks for all the input guys, looks like Ill be ordering a 7800GTX soon, and like u say, if the X1800 owns it, Ill sell the 7800.

Now that ive decided to go nVidia, Ive got a couple other questions. Should I get the GTX version, or, since Im watercooling, should I get the GT version and OC it to GTX speeds? I mean, it would be nice to save the money but its not that big of a deal.

But then again, should I just get the GTX and OC it to speeds the GT never can reach?

thanks!

OK, GTX it is then. Any suggestions on which card I should get? Im going to watercool it, so the standard HSF is going off right away anyways, so are there any manufacturers that sell cards without a hsf, or with just a cheap one? And is the best thing about BFG Tech their 247 support or do their cards come with better RAM etc. than their competitors?

but isn't the x1800 (or r520) a mainstream product and is meant to compete w/ nvidia's mainstream product (not sure which one that is). ATi will then release a high-end product "r580" that will have more pipes and is meant to compete w/ nvidia's high end product. If that is true, then there is no way the ATi product that's being released soon is gonna compete w/ 7800 gtx since they are in different classes. Therefore, you might have to wait EVEN LONGER if you want to get a equivalent product of the ATi flavor.

edit: I just looked at the prices and apparently, the r520 is meant to compete with the 7800 gtx as they are in the same price range.

Looks like you made a good decision. I was going to point out that if you wait for the 1800, you might as well wait for a crossfire mobo. Anyone know when those will hit the retail channel? Didn't think so.
That reminds me. If you're building a new rig- you might go ahead and get one that can do SLI- especially with the screen res you'll want to use. Also, while I'm giving advice, for the love of God, buy AMD. I've bought my last Intel proc.

I say pick up the eVGA 7800GTX, the one NOT packaged with a motherboard or Battlefield2. I picked mine up for $475 shipped from newegg, and they have plenty in stock. eVGA's come as 450/1200 which is up from the stock speeds of 430/1200....also, eVGA has a lifetime warrenty which still covers the card when you swap out the stock cooler as long as you don't physically damage the card...so that means when you go water cooling, it' still guarenteed....for life. ;)

I think 1 is more likely. But still, I don't think the 7800GTX prices will drop. If anything, they might go up. See, if the r520 is comparable to the 7800gtx, then nvidia will be able to price it just below ATI's offering and still be offering a "good" deal. W/ no competition they have to keep the price low to make it seem good.

See siggy for what I did \/ \/ \/ \/

ATI , unlike NVIDIA doesnt promise %100000 performance increase with X drivers coming out next year - i dont know how many times NVIDIA releases a card to only be burdened with constant issues, bugs, - "optimizations" and such (yes ati has done this as well - cheating)

often ATi card perform how they are supposed to out of the box like any hardware should, not hey buy our card and eventually we will get you drivers that work.

you hvae already waited this long, 1 more month wont kill you =p
in 1 month you will have 2 options instead of 1 now, and you can pick what you want. and possibly save some $$ on a 7800GTX surely prices will drop a bit by then

r520 16pipe = 7800GT
r520 24 pipe = 7800GTX

r580 - new generation of cards..

We really can't say anything yet about performance until the card is out IMO.

Actually they do promise increases by upgrading drivers. If the ATI drivers rocked out of the box, why do they release new ones? If you think the first round of drivers for the X1800 are going to be nice and smooth, you are dreaming.

I don't see GTX prices dropping any more than they are right now. At least not anywhere close to the r520 launch. If the competition is more expensive, why get cheaper? In fact I would increase prices a bit.

Yes, get an eVGA card. They OC well (compared to some other GTX's, about on par w/ BFG mostly) and and have a lifetime warranty.

howcome no one even mentions the 7800gt? does the 7800gtx perform that much faster than the 7800gt? looking at benchmarks, the gtx only performs about 3-5% faster than the gt, even though the gt has 4 less pipelines. am i missing something?

But the GTX OCes a heck of a lot. An OCed GTX will pull away from a GT a little more than 5% I think. And since they aren't THAT much different price wise, why bother with less?

what's the lowest price? the lowest i can find it $350 for the gt and $450 for the gtx. i don't know about you, but $100 is a big difference to me. none of these prices include tax n shipping

I love threads like this...

Simple answer, If you need something now.. Get it, and get the best you can afford now, and hope it lasts.

No matter how long you wait there will always be something newer, faster or better "right around the corner" .

Watch, ATI will release their x1800 what ever card... and Nvidia will release a 7800Ultra ...
It will happen, and then everybody's GTX will be considered obsolete..... And we'll have 900 more threads just like this one :)

Buy what you can afford now, and enjoy it...

I agree buy what you can and be happy, I have an x800xl sure it isnt the fastest card but it plays everything fine for me at 1280x1024.

Just buy the best you can afford(or need) and dont read the vid card forum when new shit comes out.
