I currently am using the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80. They are very great speakers and i honestly don't think i would want to replace them since they sound amazing even though they are 10 years old. If i were to upgrade, what should i get? I've been looking at the audioengine 5's and they look like that would be good, but i don't know. Suggestions please?

Nice I remember those speakers. My friend had them and all I can remember is crazy bass.

What do you want from an upgrade (5.1, 2.1) and for what purpose (gaming, music, movies)?

Haha yah, the bass on them are great! Honestly, i don't know that much about sound systems, But I'm looking for something that would let me enjoy Music, movies, and a slight bit of gaming. Something that audiofiles would enjoy, but also something that is cheap. Also what is the difference from a 2.1 system and a 5.1?

I generally recommend against going to a surround system unless you absolutely-must-have-it. You can find a 2 channel (2.0) or a 2 channel + sub (2.1) that is significantly superior in quality for the same price. For what you describe, a 2 or 2.1 will be perfect. If you aren't into big bass, a sub-woofer isn't needed.

Do you require the speakers to be self powered or would a receiver+speakers setup work for you? There are some good choices in the self-powered category, but I am less familiar with them.

I honestly would prefer a self powered one, but i can also go for a reciever + speaker setup. Whichever one will sound the best and within a good price range. Also i am into bass, but i can hold off on that for the time being.

Also what is the difference from a 2.1 system and a 5.1?

Its the number of channels/speakers and subwoofers. 2.0 is just two speakers, 5.1 is five speakers and a sub.

It really depends on your budget, your probably not going to be able to go the receiver route cheaply. The receive itself will probably set you back at least $200.

2.1 is prefect for music, 5.1 is great for games and movies. If you go the receiver route you can always start with just two speakers and slowly build it out.

If you want a cheap all in one setup for music a lot of people seem to like the Swan M10 for $100.

Hmm those swans look very nice, but i'm wondering if anybody has had any experience with them? How do they sound and how much of a kick does the bass have?

Also is there anything else that you guys would recommend?

If your looking for a lot of bass they probaby aren't a good choice.
