I have an ASUS 955X motherboard that's currently running a Pentium 4 630 (Prescott 3GHz chip). I got this setup less than a year ago. I'm thinking of buying myself a new Pentium D 900 series (Presler) chip for the board. They can be had for around $200 now it seems. I know Conroe is on the way but that would require buying a new motherboard and I'm not really interested in doing that.

When I built my current system I had basically told myself I'd upgrade to a dual core chip in a year or so. This is back when the Smithfields were out but were failing to impress people much. I've been hearing good things about Presler and I'm just wondering if you all think it would be worth the relatively inexpensive upgrade to get it.
 
I would wait. First it will drive the current line ups price down and second if you want to upgrade the mobo....the Conroe will be out. :D
 
If you can wait a month or so, there are some significant price cuts on 9XX chips.
 
Ah yes, I hadn't thought of that aspect. The Core line release will probably make 900 series processors pretty cheap...

Yeah upgrading my motherboard really isn't something I'm interested in. It's not worht the money for me to do such a big upgrade so soon after building the system. I'll wait a month or so and see how the prices go.

As far as performance, are Preslers noticibly better in gaming than prescotts? I know they do multitasking quite a bit better...
 
Dual core is very nice for multitasking. Gaming is probably a wash...sometimes you might see improvement, but overall, you probably won't see much improvement.
