Should I upgrade this card?

I'm pretty happy with everyting else but I had some slow downs with HL2 and Doom3. I don't know what the current video cards really are. I could spend about $400. next month if people think it is a good idea. Moderators feel free to move this if I should have put it in General Hardware. Thanks
My current system specs are
P42.8
Abit IS7-E2
1gb Kinston Memory
Ati 9700pro
Antec 350w psu
Sony 19in crt
Wd 120gb hard disk
Lite-on 52x cd burner
Lite-on 8x dvd burner.

Yes, a 9700 is a bit oudated by today's standards. I would suggest going for a 6800GT if you have the budget, they are on sale at NewEgg for $377.

Anything in the 6800 series will give you a big bang for your buck. I have almost an identical setup to yours (except I had a 9700PRO AIW and a 400Watt Zalman PSU) and it gave me a big boost after I got a 6800GT.

A 6800 will do a good job, 6800GT even better (I can run Doom3 1280x1024, High Detail, with moderate AA/AF settings, and timedemo around 45-50fps).

Unless you plan on upping your whole system in the next 6 months, I'd vote yes for a 6800 flavored card.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't plan on doing anything else to the system for probably a year or so. I'll take a look at the 6800gt.

That system is in good shape otherwise--a 6800GT would be a noticeable improvement in FPS games.
