Should I upgrade my intel proc?

Was wondering what people thought about going from a 2.4C intel proc (800MHz) to a 3.2E, which uses the prescott core. I have an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard and can't really spend the money for a total overall. The 3.2E is going for about $225. Will I see a nice bump to justify the money being spent. Any input would be great.

How about overclocking your 2.4C proc... no promises but theres a good chance of hitting 3.2 with it

On that board you should be able to get a nice OC if you have good ram. If not I'd spend the money on the processor. A 3.2E will definatley out peform a 2.4C by a huge margin.

Why the 3.0C. Isn't that the Northwood Core. Wouldn't I want the Presscott?

3.0c's are excellent overclockers and their cheap but more importantly there easy to cool on air

Well, i am always conservative on overclocking because I am afraid I will burn something out and be out a component such as the proc, Gotta watch the wallet. Do you think that there would be a problem with cooling for the 3.2E on the prescott core?

prescotts run hot and they hog juice like nobodies business i suggest the 3.0 and oc it to 3.4 youll have much better results...by the way thats not to much of an overclock its very reasonable

or just rma it and be all like "i have absolutely no clue what happened"...dont hate you know youve done it

*puts on flame suite*

actually, I haven't done it. so shut up
wow somone needs to grow up...its easy to tell someone to shut up on an online forum, and at that i shall leave this thread.

Agreed. Will be nice when folks finally figure out that respect costs them nothing. Online or not.

The 3.0C would probably be the best bet, but either is fine. I would say see what you can get out of the 2.4, worst case senario you fry the proc and still buy a new one, best case you save some money.

I have a 3.0 Ghz prescott, and i got it up to 3.6.....however, i got a nice 45 dollar thermaltake heatsink..fan...ect.....and yes..prescotts DO run a lot hotter
youre definatly better off going with the northwood core 3.0...especially wit your mobo.
I couldnt NOT go pciE tho :)
heh

Hey gang I just saw this thread and would like to ask a few questions about a possible upgrade of my own from my current gear (see sig).

I was thinking Abit IC7-MaxII ($137 at the egg) and a 2.4C ($163) and gettinga a nice OC with the help of a beefy heatsink.

I have a few questions, though.

Is the IC7-MaxIII worth the 60 or so dollars more then the MaxII and what kind of RAM and heatsink should I consider?

I want to keep this upgrade somewhere near $550 and I need a gig of solid RAM for overclocking, plus a beefy heatsink.

Thanks guys.

I have an IC7-Max3 with a 3.0C in my gaming machine and an IC7-Max2 with a 2.4C in my server. The only benefit I have seen between the boards when it comes to temps is that the IC7-Max3's MOFETS run cooler. The OATES on the Max3 is a very nice feature, especially if you have a prescott in there. The OATES has the added side effect of drawing air off of the processor heatsink and blowing it out the case. Both of my systems are in identical cases with the exact same fans and other cooling. The Max3 also has cooler case temps.

Is it that huge of a difference, no; but it should make it easier to squeeze a few more mhz out of your processor. I'd find the ram you want first and then see if you have the money left over to get the Max3.

What RAM and heatsink would you recommend for a 600 MHz OC on that board?

I am partial to Corsair, but there are a lot of people that know a lot more about which ram is best for what. I suggest talking to my good friend the search function ;), or start a new thread.

Well with P4P800 and 2.8C and Kingston Value Ram I got a 800Mhz overclock to desktop, so anythings possible :D
