my dad asked me if i wanted to sell him my secondary pc to replace the aging hp thats my familys main computer. its the second one in my sig, but here are the specs anyway:

p4 2.0ghz
512mb ddr
elitegroup mobo
geforce quadro 2 64mb 128 bit
dvd rom
cd burner

so i was thinking: should i keep this pc, or sell it to my dad for around $300 (thats how much he offered me :D) and upgrade to athlon 64? it really helps to have a spare pc, but i could always make one out of my current amd athlon xp setup if i upgrade. what do you guys think?

75 gb hdd (ill upgrade from the 60gb hard drive in my sig, since the 75 is a deathstar and wont work with other drives and ill need the 60gb one to work with other drives)

if thats too little, how much do you think i should ask for it?

He wiped your ass for a few years, paid for your shit or more than that... you don't really need a spare, if he offered you $300 take it and consider the difference of what it is worth a little thank you for raising you. ;)

Yes, it is "family" and the issue here is not what is it's fair market value. Or perhaps you will start getting a bill after supper each night with the 15% service gratuity factored in, and a meter running everytime they taxi you someplace in the family car.

Take the $300 and enjoy the warm glow inside of being a nice person. Do not rub in how generous you are being and that the system is worth much more than that... so is the rent on your bedroom.

 what's wrong with you? he's ur dad for crying out loud! give it to him for free! is a little money gonna bring u any happyness?

.....u make me sick.....

since its family i would do it just cuz of that

tis the season to be givin ur family a nice price

well, my dad decided he didnt need it, because he was happy with the one we have, and didnt want to get used to a different one, even though i offered it to him for free. so what im going to do is, sell it online, and buy whatever the fastest p3 processor is out there to upgrade the family computer and surprise him :) whats the fastest p3 out there? also, how much could i get for the p4 comp?

If *I* were buying it, I wouldn't offer you more than $300-350. But you might get someone to pay your around $400 or so.

If you really want to get rid of it and want to have the warm fuzzies at the same time, I believe there are some charitable organizations that are collecting computers to give to families of soldiers that are serving overseas. This gives them an opportunity to communicate via email with their loved one serving their country.

Ask not how much you would get for selling, but for how much you get for giving... tis the season you know.

You sound like my gf.

I keep trying to convince her that a server cannot be gamed on, a test machine can't be used for serving, and a gaming machine can't be tested on. :)

She'll never understand. :(

I like the idea of giving it to your dad as an early christmas present.

My folks liked the computer I put together for them and it's about half as nice as the one you have.

Well if you GIVE it outright to your dad, can you still use it as a "Backup?" Or are you one of the few that have moved from your parents basement? :)

Hell, give it to the family. Your new machine will be much better.
