Should I partition my Raptor?

I bought a 36g Raptor today so replace the tiny HD that's been my boot drive for a few years now. I don't think my Windows partition needs all 36G. Instead I was thinking of making a Windows partion of about 6-8 gigs and using the rest for some apps like HL2 or WoW that have long load times.

If I do this will I notice any significant decrease in speed?

I have a 74GB Raptor and I have mine partitioned 12/57ish. I use the 12 for the OS and Apps, while I use the 57ish partition for all games. I then have a SATA2 250GB WD HDD that I use for all my storage (ie photos, music, whatever).

Keeps me organized.

If you have to reformat your Windows partition, the "games" partition will be useless, as you'll need to reinstall the software within Windows.

I have a 74gb Raptor which I use for WindowsXP and all installations, and a separate drive for file storage. This way, I have a drive from which I can pull patches and whatnot for the software I inevitably have to reinstall when I reformat the Windows drive.

Agreed, and therein lies the main problem with partitioning. I'd keep the old drive for backups and temp data storage when its time to format and go for the gusto on the raptor.

I'm building a new box soon with a 36G SCSI as the system disk and I don't plan to partition it at all. I currently have a 10G system partition (which I thought was *plenty* when I created it 2 years ago); it's nearly full.

I've only had problems transferring steamapps. Anything outside of that I've had on a seperate partition, formatted, updated, then double clicked the game executible and it booted just fine. Let alone the times I've burned games off in data format whenever I didn't have a seperate storage partition.

Yeah, most games are fine and don't really care if you have it "installed" or not.

I haven't partitioned a disk in four years. They're cheap enough now that it's kind of silly to even consider partitioning a valid excuse to break up your disk. Besides, games on the same physical disk aren't going to be any faster on a seperate partition...it could actually make your system a bit sluggish.

On my current 200gb cuda; i made a 15gb system partition thinking i would toss a few select apps on it and primary games (steam/guidl wars)

well when my games started crashing due to no hd space errors; i got annoyed:p

When i get my 74gb raptor its going as os/game drive in one partition

Splitting a 36GB drive into a small Windows partition and the rest for apps will net you no gain, since all the work is still being done on the same drive.

I heard partitioning any raptor will only decrease performance/speed.

On the other hand, partition a regular PATA drive wont lose any performance.

Is that correct?
