I have a pretty decent rig as far as day to day computing goes, but I want to be a cool kid and play Doom3 and HL2 when they're still fresh. Basically is an AMD64 machine worth the money? And, if so, what socket configuration should I switch to?

Current rig:
P4 2.8 oc 3.0 HT (don't flame me on the sucky oc, it's a prescott on a.....)
ECS i865 P or something of that sort
512MB DDR400
2x 80GB 8mb cache wd's
8x Nec dvd+-rw
ATi 9200 64mb (or maybe 32mb, can't remember)
Audigy 1

Is 64bit computing really going to revolutionize the market like all the AMD folks believe, or will it be dual core tech, or both? I really am unable to forecast these kinds of trends. So comments will be appreciated.

Do you game? If so, forget about a new mobo/proc. Your proc is fine, but that vid card needs to die. Based on your wanting to play Doom 3 and HL2 (and don't forget Far Cry... IMHO better than Doom 3 & I bet it'll be better than HL2 as well), if you're not you'd like to be.

Depending on your budget, I'd suggest the following:
<$200 9600pro or 9600XT (sorry, haven't been paying a lot of attention. I think I saw a pro for $120, I expect XTs are more)
~$200 9800pro 128MB or 6800le 128MB
~$250-300 6800
~$400 6800GT 256MB
~$500 6800U 256MB or X800XT 256MB

Also, what kind of ram do you have? You need good ram to OC a P4, since the multis are locked. Actually, unless you have an older one lying around you need good ram to OC an Athlon as well for the same reason unless you cough up massive $$$ for an Athlon FX.

After the vid card, my next target in your system would be your ram. If you don't have "OCing" ram that could well be the reason you only got a 200MHz OC. Depending on what type it is either add another 512MB of the same stuff or toss it and get 2 512MB modules of something good.

After the ram & vid card if you still can't get a good OC you could gamble and change your mobo. Depending on your CPU temps, a new HS/fan might also be in order.
 
No need for CPU upgrade. Just buy a 6800 series video card and I guarantee that you will be more than happy.
