i should be receiving a new desktop this weekend and am wondering if the performance increase will be enough so that i could wait for either the nvidia gtx6** cards or for the rest of the radeon hd 7**** series to be released. my current desktop runs win XP, core 2 duo 2.3ghz cpu, 3 GB ddr2-667 RAM, and an EVGA GTS250, with a max monitor resolution of 1680x1050. I'm not getting a new monitor yet so that resolution will stay the same, but i will be moving to win 7 64 bit, 8 GB ddr3-1333 RAM, i7-2600k CPU, and dual 1GB GT545 nvidia cards (was the only choice of GPU that was offered.)

I'm thinking with all the other hardware improvements, and staying at the 1680x1050 resolution, i should be able to get away with waiting a bit for the next gen cards to release. But was looking for some outside opinion as well since i'm not really sure about the value of these GT545 cards, even if they are in SLI.
 
Where are you getting your PC? How much are you spending alone on the dual 545? If anything relatively close to 200, I'll op for single 560 gtx or 6870. You'll find them for cheaper than 200 and you'll be able to play most games on high with that resolution.
 
i got a prebuilt machine, so those cards were part of it. it was a sale from alienware so i got the whole setup for less than $1100. had i been able to talk my wife into lett me get it two days earlier the gtx560ti would have been the default card in there, but they were out of stock by the time she relented. i was hoping that the performance was gonna be good enough that could wait for the 7870's to release and grab two of those.
 
it's an Alienware Aurora r3, i was shocked those were the only one available as well. that's all they offer for the newest high end desktop as well. no Radeon 6990's, no 6870's, no 560ti's, I'v heard there's some major supply issues, but not sure how accurate they are.
