should i lap my quad im @3.4ghz watercooled and my temps are
idle 1.44v core0-36,core1-30,core2-36,core3-29
prime95 load 1.392v core0-55,core1-50,core2-55,core3-49

Those are good temps. If you're not going higher, then there really isn't a need to lap. Well, except that it's [H]ard. :)
 
You don't lap because you want lower temperatures. You lap because the CPU and/or heat sink are not flat and making good contact. Don't ask us to tell you whether to lap based on performance -you'll have to check the flatness and then decide.
 
The only reason to lap is if you have BIG variances between core temps. My q6600 and TRUE had as much as 14C difference across cores before i lapped, now they all stay within 1-2C.
 
If you have big differences in the core temps and the CPU and heat sink are already flat, lapping won't do anything. Lapping isn't voodoo, it's just making sure you have a good mechanical fit between the parts.

While that is somewhat true, you DO lap to improve temperatures. Having poor contact between the IHS and HSF will cause poor heat transfer and lower temperatures. It also means that more TIM is needed to fill the gap between the two, which results in less heat transferred. I'm not sure why you think that lapping has no effect on temperatures.

I'm not saying that it has no effect. I'm saying that high temps are a symptom of the problem - they are not the problem. The problem is one of several things - too much or bad compound application, poor contact due to bad mounting, poor contact due to surfaces not being flat, etc. Once you've determined what the problem is, then you can find the solution. IF the problem is that the mating surfaces are not flat, then you lap.

You don't lap just because the temps are nasty. If the problem is bad compound application, lapping is a waste of time and may cause damage if done wrong.

Some people obsess on lapping. It's one approach to fine-tuning the temperatures if there's a need. But first there has to be a legitimate need.
 
I've lapped my E8400 and my previous E2180 - neither showed much improvement after lapping.

However I did notice that the E8400 was convex but the E2180 was concave prior to lapping.
 
I lapped mine due to poor temps, because the base of my heatsink was not flat. This improved temps because now my cpu and heatsink matched better.
 
I usually reseat the HSF a few times, then lap. Also, lapping for me is an afterthought unless I have a large difference between the core temps.

With my quad, 2 cores were upper 60's under load, and 2 were low 60's. Lapped to a mirror finish and I sit at 52-54 on all 4 cores.

Another thing to remember, when you lap the IHS and HSF, it takes a lot less TIM. Chances are if you use the same amount as normal, your temps will be on the high side.
