Hey guys, I have an opportunity to sell my Asus Radeon 4890(in sig, the one with the 2 red fans) for $150 CDN. If I were to do this whats my next card. I do not plan on getting a bigger monitor than my current 22``. The card does all I ask of it and more currently, but is not DX11 obviously, and I typically sell my hardware before its drastically de-valued.

Thoughts....

TIA!

Sound like a GTX 460 would fit your budget and will handle welll at that resolution.

Since you cannot run SLI on your motherboard, I'd go with the 5850.

Grab another 5850 after the price cut. Your PSU can certainly handle it.

the 5850 is $330 CDN, waaaay over priced right now. Any idea on when the price cut is coming?

true, but some how I cannot seem to pass up on the chance to recover 75% of my gpu purchase 8 months after purchase, while getting a dx11 card. Ideally I want to stay ATI but the 5850's are stoopid overly priced right now(here in Canada).

I still dont know what to do. I might have a week to think it over and see what the market does without losing my buyer.

Keep the input coming guys :)

Most of the 5830's seem to be in a similar price range to the 460 if you wanted to stay ati. I would say go with either of those cards. 5830 may be a downgrade in some places though.

I disagree. Hardware tessellation is one of the most drastic changes a DirectX update has given us. It can give objects unprecedented complexity.

True... but how many games actually use DX11 right now? Right now it's the same things as DX10 all over again. Very few games, and as of now - very little differences between DX10 and DX11 in them.

Right now most games are still Xbox360 and PS3 standards - and until new generation consoles are released, I doubt I'll be upgrading my GTX 260. The only ones who may really need to to upgrade from the last DX10 cards are those who are planning to drastically increase their resolutions.

yeah but you wont be able to run max settings and use tessellation on a gtx460 in many cases anyway. you guys are giving this gtx460 too much praise. I think many of you have been stupefied by the poor performance per dollar of this generation and just happy to see a $200-$230 card that doesnt suck. reality is that a gtx460 isnt much faster in some games than an old gtx260. heck in the techreport gtx460 review the gtx260 matched the gtx460 1gb and even beat the 768mb in some cases.

Not quite sure why people suggest GTX 460, its not even much faster than a 4890.

its about 10% faster, but that is hardly noticeable. Not really worth paying more for small gain.

some might say DX11 Tessellation.. 460 is a mid range card, it won't even runs smooth if you turn those options on. especially in metro 2033..

I'd say wait. Neither the 5830, nor the 460 are much of an upgrade from what you have now unless you want to play at 1920x1200 or higher.

I think your card will serve you well, DX11 still doesn't bring much to the table, by the time it does there will be better/cheaper options.

I am with others here.DX11 not that big a deal to my eyes and my 275 does just fine.Do not want to wait forever but, Southern Islands is not that for off.Now if a killer deal comes along I may by from either camp.

I wasn't gonna bother replying this pretty much says it.

You can more or less ignore directx when purchasing a card unless you're an enthusiast and even then nothing big going on right now between 9/10/11.

baseline card for 1900x1200 and under is HD4850/GTS250. I personally got away with 9600GSO in sli 750/900. Handled everything out even today.

The "I'm an average gamer without a car made of gold" upgrade plan is if you have 4870 1GB/GTX260 or above you're going above cost/performance value. check tomshardware for the round up.

the HD4890 is a smoking good card. There is not a single gpu faster than two 4890's. Currently 4870x2 is still second only really to 5970.

Ride out the year. Thats my 2 cents.
