should I include my cool C2D in 8800GTX loop?

Since I started building my pc I've been monitoring temperatures and my CPU seems to sit around 22°C - 28°C depending on load, whereas unless I put a lot of extra cooling (giant evaporative cooler without water) it idles at 62°C and its a bit hard to monitor it under load because I'm so into whatever game I'm playing. SO ANYWAYS I'm going to put water cooling in this thing soon no buts about it, but should I be leaving the C2D out of the loop altogether?
As I think that adding water cooling will just heat up the CPU rather than cool it. So should I only attach the cooling block to the 8800GTX?

oops i put this in the wrong place how do I move a thread to water cooling??

Might get more replys in the water cooling section. Try using NVTempLogger to see what kind of temps your getting in games. My 8800GTS with stock cooling was hitting 81C under load but now gets under 60C under load with a low rpm fan and HR-03+.

LOL there goes my water-cooling out the window... just ordered my HR-03 PLUS... cost me less than AU$50 that boots compared to well over $200 for a similar result.

one more Q do I need RAMSINK?

It comes with Ram sinks and others for the video card. I used Artic Silver 5 on the core. Now this is the important part. Clean the all the chips that require sinks VERY VERY well. A High % of Isopropyl Alcohol will be needed along with a ton of Q-tips. I spent a very long time prepping mine becuase of so many ppl having issue with sinks falling off. Some even use artic silver ceramic epoxy to ensure they dont fall off. When you start putting the small sinks on... press and hold for a 10-15 second count on each one. This DOES make a difference. Good luck and I hope you got a 92mm fan for it. If not id look into a Nexus or Noctua to keep it as silent as possible.

like glue? nuh uh... doesn't it bolt on?? i have artic silver at home but I wont epoxy because I emailed the makers of my GTX (inno3D) and they said if I have issues with the card after I install better cooling that if I want to RMA it at a later date I need to re-install the original heatsink... is it a MUST to glue it down??

sorry i read too quickly ... you said "SOME PEOPLE" whew!! relief.. yes I understand what you say about holding it on for 15 seconds each.. it makes sense

also do I really need to use alcohol and cotton buds? I've always thought my thumb was an optimal thermal paste removal tool in the past?

oh and I got an Antec Tricool 92mm something fan to go with it...

ok yea the gpu heatsink bolts on but the ram sinks gotta be epoxied down (unless it comes with thermal tape) and also yes it is good to use alcohol and q-tips to clean thermal paste however you thumb method is very very bad...static alert

Your thumb will not do the job. It takes many passes over the sinks to remove that paste becuase it leaves behind a kind of oily substance that wont allow the sink to stick properly. I used a TON of Q-tips. I would put my finger behind the swab area and press down enough to help it with out using to much force and would make quick strokes. I probably made 5 passes on each piece that gets a sink and then used a dry Q-tip after. I have no problems with mine sticking becuase my card mounts upside down in my case but Ive read to many horror stories of them falling off. Better safe then sorry. Keep in mind after they go through a few temp cycles they will adhere to the chips better. The thermal tape on these things are really bad. Keep in mind your thumb is never a good way to clean a surface. Your leaving behind junk and oils from your finger. Prep it with alcohol or Artic Clean. I know there are other thigns out there that dont leave behind a residue but those are the most popular.

Here is a pic of mine.. you can kinda see the small sinks im talking about.

maybe I should turn my case upside down.... it'll only stuff me around when I eject a dvd :D :D LOL

that looks like a cramped and crowded beast you have there

hopefully the press and hold method works... cas I'm just not willing to do any permanent mods on a video card I payed AU$750 for... i'm not that crazy (yet)

Hey Copyright,

have you used that heatsink on a real hot day ie around 40°C because here in australia it gets hot, and it's just getting warm now (last year in perth we had 42°C+ 3 days in a row). And the last computer I let cool off in the swimming pool had significant problems booting after that :D

Well I guess "better than factory heatsink" is sufficient..

oh and the ramsinks come with tape on them

Yeah but the ramsink tape is awful as Ive already stated in my earlier posts. I dont know why but the stuff they use does not stick very well. My home is no hotter then 78F. My case is designed to be upside down and I dont really see it as being cramped but I guess it could be. Here is a side shot of the setup. I dont have to worry about the sinks falling off and so far everything stays cool to the touch.

yes I installed it last night. I must say that the tape is VERY worrying, all it takes is a little bump for those little heatsinks to drop off, if you don't bump it they hang on fine, but I don't know how well that'll hold out over time.

I don't think I'll do it right now, but with the epoxy, is there a special type? or just general epoxy resin? If I put on the tiniest little drop on each heatsink, do you think I'll still be able to remove them if absolutely necessary (not easily but cleanly).

But this new HSF is fantastic my Idle temp has dropped from 62°C to 45°C (and that's using the crappy white thermal paste that came with it as I couldn't find my arctic silver). Under pressure (2h of gaming HL2 ep2 with everything inc vsync maxed out) it maxed out at 63°C according to rivatuner (i'm sure this value will rise after a more intensive gaming session).

VERY AWESOME

PS oh it's funny but installing that huge HSF actually gave me more space in my case (I put it on upside down) now I can easily plug/unplug my onboard sata/other junk easier!

You got that thing fast.... who did you order from?

I work at a computer shop. I just ordered it from one of our local suppliers who we order a lot of stuff from Altech www.altech.com.au and I even got it delivered to my work that afternoon.

oh and being non-us can't order from newegg :( but I'll have a search :)

gosh it aint easy finding this epoxy... i found one online retailer but its like $20 and they don't have paypal. (i wont trust random websites with my credit/bank details)

Keep searching im sure something will turn up. Are you having any problems with the sinks falling off? I havent tested mine yet but ive heard they stick better after a few heat cycles.

A little off topic here, but Copyright, what ram cooler is that you are using? I might need one myself.

Good job.. now your seeing what ive been saying about the thermal tape LOL. Dont use just any epoxy... it needs to be thermal epoxy like artic silver Alumina.

Some claim you can mix it a certain way and still get the sinks off if needed. You got that thing fast.... who did you order from?

I have to say right now that any heatsink epoxied to a BBA memory chip is gunna be permanent. With arctic epoxy you can mix it with arctic silver to reduce it's strength, but I've only ever successfully removed a heatsink from an old skool mem chip that had big legs all round it. All vid cards these days use BBA memory chips.

Epoxy to a BBA chip and that's that; warranty void and no going back. Personally I don't have a problem with that myself and often just use superglue which I reckon is better than any epoxy.

OCZ Ram cooler. Little loud at full speed but I have uGuru undervolting it. Doesnt move a lot of air and im starting to think its more for show at the 2000rpm I run it at.

Yeah after I broke it in with a few hours of gaming, I decided to check out if I got lower temps with the fan upside down (which was actually 2°C higher). While removing the card from the slot, I bumped a heatsink and it just fell off. None have fallen off without help, but with the amount I reconfigure/generally fiddle with my pc, if I did that and didn't notice.. nightmare.

So I found one on an online retailer, but omg because its such a small order (i didn't want to buy anything else because they're ridiculously overpriced like the HR-03+ is AU$100 compared to less than AU$50 that I paid for it) I had to pay extra handling fee. It ended up being AU$26 freekin dollars:mad:, but I ordered it anyways:eek:, but it'll be a few days before it gets here.

Yeah I realise I'm voiding my warranty. But my warranty is equally void if I burn out any of those chips when one of those ramsinks drops.

Quoting BENDER: Lets pick up some cheap floosies head down to vegas and void their warranties all night long!!

So when I'm gluing I'm guessing less is more right? it's more important to worry about it not dripping over the edge (it is electically conductive right) than getting 100% chip coverage right? right right lol:p, i can't believe my speech idiosyncrasies crossover into text

oh and btw, you may not notice by the way I speak but I'm REALLY nervous about this....

I figured you may end up having to epoxy them. I pushed on mine nad they feel like they are on there pretty good. I assume my prep work had something to do with that Guss they really dont need to be that good to stay on my setup tho. Good luck wtih it all.

but I even went to the extent of the whole alcohol swabbing fun instead of what I personally thought would be adequate (a thumb job). that sounds wrong.

Thanks heaps for your help :D

LOL, if you think they arent sticking now you would have really been in for some fun with just a thumb job on it! Get your epoxy on there and you wont have to worry accept for voiding your warranty :D
