Should I get this!? Craigslist.

Go for it! I just scored two around that price point myself earlier today in Tucson.

Just kidding icor! Its a lot cheaper than you'll find a FW900 for, but you couldn't pay me $50 to go back to CRT's these days; save up for a new monitor with a good refresh rate and low blur!

Well, I bought it. I wanted the lightboost monitor, but it's so hard to swallow paying $280 for something with so many problems.

You should be careful about your response to someone that's about to buy something. No worry, I wanted a big CRT anyway. ;)

Still have one of those in the garage. It's solid for hardcore type gaming, but I don't like it for much else.

I need help with my monitor. I've changed the focus via the screws in the side, changed convergence, and some other stuff.
Yet, text near the top of the screen is Much more dull than text at the bottom.

Is my monitor a dud?

...Okay, the person I bought it from said he'd take it back (I hope I don't get scammed) if I have problems with the image.

There are two black lines that never go away, and I can't get it to focus decently. I was eventually able to get the top kind of okay, but then the bottom sucked.. etc.

the two black lines are the support wires to stabilize the aperture grille. They're a feature of all trinitron (and diamondtron) displays.

They shouldn't bug you if you don't spend time hunting for them all the time.

Not sure about your focus issue. You might consider asking Unkle Vito (he posts as LAGRUNAUER

I just figured out the focus issue, but it seems there's nothing I can do about it.
If I use a dvi-vga adapter, this happens. My laptop doesn't need an adapter, and it turns out pretty well.

Interesting, I take it that your laptop has a VGA port on the video card then?

Maybe try using a diff DVI-VGA cable and seeing if the situation improves (unless you are happy using your laptop).

How is the black level on the display? Is there a place you can adjust the G2 (sometimes known as Screen) voltage?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on its performance, in particular gaming :)

I did change the cable, and the adapter, and scaling/refresh rate, in nVidia control panel. It didn't fix my issue.

It was amazing for gaming, but I can't put up with the fuzziness. And no, I'm not going to use my laptop - so, I have to get rid of this monitor.

I don't know about G2. Black level seemed fine, in a dark room.

hm, I don't see that option in my settings. Have you installed the correct drivers (although I don't think that would make a diff)

Where do I get drivers? My PC recognized the CRT's model, if that proves it already has drivers?

wait, u said u changed cable and adaptor. Typically DVI-VGA cables are self contained units.

ah right, I know what you're talking about. Might be worth trying one of those cables that have the adaptor built in. But dunno if that will help.

I just find it strange that the VGA-VGA works fine. Maybe it's the nvidia card that's faulty. Maybe not. Does your laptop have a DVI-A or DVI-I output?

My laptop's DVI does not accept an adapter. But, I have a bunch of desktops and I could try it on one of them.

However, it's more trouble than it's worth; I'd rather just give up FPS games. I sold the CRT, but I have the option to buy it back any time if I find a way to make it work.

Even if I get it to work, the adapter uses the same port as my dual-link monitor, so I'd constantly be swapping them.

I appreciate the assistance you gave, in case I decide to try again.

np, good on you for giving it a go :)

I decided to test it on another PC, with DVI.. I used a 9800, and it looked right.
I guess my GTX 670 is defective, I'll have to find out about an RMA.

And if I can put my dual link on HDMI via adapter, I won't have to unplug my good LCD to use the CRT. :D

good stuff, just keep in mind that an HDMI - VGA adaptor will have a limited pixel clock, so high res and refreshes may not work. Depending on the adaptor, input lag may be introduced (but not sure). From what I've read, the HD Fury introduces no lag, however.

No, mate. I want to use DVI -> HDMI - for my LCD, to free up the Other port for my CRT.

I don't think the problem was my PC. I noticed that my laptop always changed to 60Hz when I connected it, and my desktop didn't even have an option to use 60Hz - it was going to 85Hz.

There's a clear difference between 60Hz and 85Hz. Unfortunately, 85Hz is significantly less sharp, but I need it for games because 60Hz seems blurry/sickening.

I think I'll play with it for a while, and see if I want to keep the CRT.

I'm also a little annoyed, because the top 1/2" or so of my screen is always stretched vertically. I can't fix this problem by changing the vertical linearity or balance.
I'm especially bothered by the poor black levels - which is natural for CRTs, I suppose. I can't play in the dark because it hurts my eyes, and if the light hits the screen directly - it becomes washed out.

But the good news is, my video card appears to be working properly! At 85Hz, the laptop became fairly blurry as well.

I tried putting in the drivers you linked me to, and it says I'm up to date.

Right now I'm trying 1280x960 ... @ 105Hz!! This might be fun. ;)

Yep, I was just gonna suggest using a lower resolution with a higher refresh rate. I prefer to play at 120hz or above myself :)

As for black levels, CRTs are capable of stellar black levels, but they tend to drift over time, and require adjustment. My guess is that if you open up the case (be careful not to touch the flyback transformer or the anode cap), you will see a potentiometer that you can adjust labeled "G2" or "Screen".

Adjusting this will restore black levels.

And no need to play in complete dark. A gentle light source behind the monitor will reduce eyestrain and avoid glare. Remember, ambient light works to change the image in two ways:

1) by reflecting off the glass, and thereby changing the image directly
2) by innervating your visual system directly, causing chromatic and luminance adaptation.

Blacks will actually look deeper through the second mechanism.

The text is a lot better @ 1280x960 than @ 1600, though now my games look very blocky.
And now, I think that nasty vertical stretch at the top is gone - or, at least reduced.

The CRT is growing on me. :D It's very nostalgic as well, and it's a major improvement over my old 19" CRT with a curved screen.

might be worth looking around for the service manual for this unit. I found the user's manual here:

http://www.hoson365.com/files/MSFE2111SB-UsersGuide-english-CDROM-Version.pdf

There may also be information on how to access a service mode or service menu or something. Not sure if one exists for the FE2111

either way, from what I can tell from the user's manual, you should be able to adjust vertical linearity using the OSD.

I Love it! I made a cheap-o desk, but I braced the top quite well so it shouldn't bow.

:)
I realized that my monitor can do 1920x1440@75.. it's so sharp! I was a little annoyed by how blurry my CRT was.. Now, it's great! :D: That's the only issue that made me seriously contemplate CRT vs LCD, after I got it.

My DVI-D to HDMI cable came in today, so now I have my LCD and CRT connected to my 670. :D

Man, that monitor (at least in this picture) looks flawless. Truly amazing. I myself have the opportunity to drop $100 and get an HP Diamondtron rebrand (it's a 22-incher) that's supposedly brand new in box... Tempting...

nice, I just added a bias light (though I don't think it's D65). Makes it much easier on the eyes when watching/gaming with the lights off.

Your money will be much better spent here than on a recalibration of your DTP-94.
