new egg offers the 9800 pro for about 210 bucks. i think this is a pretty good deal considering that it goes for about a hundred bucks more at stores. should i get the card now or wait until newer cards come out. do you think the price will go down signicificantly or just slightly. and if i do get this card, should i replace the hsf and add hs's to the ram? because i've been reading threads where other users who has the cards, report that they get minor artifacting after a couple hours of intense game play due to heating of the ram.

thanks fellas.

:p

yeah its not a bad card at all. but if you want to get the card, wait until after the new cards come out, prices on the 9800pro might go down a bit.

the 9800 Pro is a great card.

If your a very heavy gamer or game a lot i would go with the 9800XT 256 Ati or Asus

Its a little more but very worth it.

The 9800 Pro (128) is a fantastic buy right now. I do think the price will go down a little bit more, but not that much. But like Sam Adams beer, it's always a good decision. :D

The 9800 Pro cards made after XT's release generally do not overclock as well as the originals for a variety of reasons. Also you should know that the Sapphire listed at NewEgg uses a R360 (XT) core, which is probably an advantage. With a little bit of cooling mods, XT clocks should be surpassable. Also the 9800 Pro uses DDR1 which has an innate latency advantage versus DDR2...something to keep in mind when comparing clocks. The combination with NewEgg's great price makes it an excellent purchase.

You have a few choices when considering cooling. You could just get the Giant III, which comes with everything you need, or grab a VGA Silencer and slap some small BGA RAMsinks on there. I personally go with a Crystal Orb for the GPU and Radio Shack sinks for the RAM, using AS5 for the former and AS epoxy for the later. Works like a charm and the card stays quite cool. You can also mod a 80 mm SmartFan to the rear of the card to help keep the rear-side cooler. It is quite possible to get the RAM on the 9800P up to 390+ MHz, I'm ATI Tool stable up to 393 but I run at 385 for 24/7 purposes. The cores don't OC as well as they used to, but again the Sapphie uses a R360 core...your overall clocks and performance will be very decent and comparable to a XT if you do it right.

I think the price difference between the 256MB and 128MB radeons is pretty high. Somewhere well over $100 I think. Also, the speed gained by getting the 256MB is in the neighborhood of 1-3% so it is hardly worth the extra money. Get yourself a 9800PRO 128MB and keep the extra $150 in you pocked and use it plus the interest to get you the next generation once they get cheap.

In short, get the 9800PRO 128MB in 2 weeks after the new ATI cards are avaliable in retail.

i just got a sweet deal at frys for 150 bucks for the 9800 pro 128 mb retail. can this retail card overclock good? whats the core on it? does anyone know??

just wait until the 6800 or X800 starts sellin physically at the stores. Then pick up a Radeon 9800XT/Pro for a much higher discount. There is also rumor that nvidia is trying to get rid of old inventory by discounting it up to 20% for manufacturers which will bring prices of the FX series down and Radeon 9x00 has to compete on as well on price, so overall prices MUST go down in the next 4-6 weeks.

"Patience my grasshopper.";)

I've heard that if you get a new 9800 pro with 256mb of ram, about $295 at newegg.com, you can flash it to XT bios and its a full functioning XT
