I was thinking of holding out until the nVidia 512mb card, but I kinda want my rig now, I've waited long enough if I wait til nvidia's 512mb card a week later rumours of something better will surface. Should I just bite the bullet and get the x1800xt 512. Gaming at 1600x1050 on a dell 2005.

In the reviews I've read, the 512mb XT has not been much faster than the GTX. Do you think it will surpass the GTX by a great margin once dualcore drivers and whatnot are released. I feel the x1800 series is more futureproofed than the 7800's. I am just afraid now that these rumours of the 600+/1800+ 512mb GTX have surfaced. What do you guys think, is the x1800xt a safe investment. Also, the XT was slaughtered by the GTX in 2 of the reviews I read in Doom3, has the "hotfix" solved this problem. See, I have yet to play farcry, Hl2, Doom 3, and the original CoD and that's what I am going to be playing along with FEAR so I want to know how much eye cany I can turn on, hdr would be nice.

Don't listen to rumors.

Judging from your intention on buying a 512MB card, I'm guessing you ae trying to futureproof yourself, because not many games can make use of a 512MB card. And if you are trying to futureproof yourself this way, you should get the XT because you said yourself it seems more futureproof. It has a slightly better feature set after all.

For the $$ ati does not slam the price for the extra 512 ram, but at this moment nothing really uses it or as they say hasn't been optimized aka bigger bandwich stronger processor. There will be so minimal difference is not even funny unless u got a dual core processor, 2gb ram and a nice mobo. 256 is enough but i think 512 ver cost $100 wich is not that bad consideringg ddr3, so go get it if u got a uber rig. The only advantage to the ATI is the avivo wich deblocks streams and make movies better, and can use aa, af with HDR.

That's what I am getting. X2 3800, 2gigs...and whatever card I end up with.

If your the type of person who will be freakin pissed off when the GTX 512 outscores your card after only owning your card for less than 1 month and shelling out over 600.00 for it then wait. Both cards will come down in price in due time. I know you've been waiting a while but your next move should depend on how your gonna feel afterwards. You know yourself better than anyone. ;)

Here's my dilema. I read these benchmarks, I look at these things and I want the best but, the best pc I've evergamed on extensively was a 6800GT/3700/1gb. So I don't know what to expect from x2 3800 vs. 4400, or GT vs. GTX or XL vs. GT or XT vs. GTX, I think I am just going to go with the x1800xt, x2 3800, 2gigs and enjoy the shit of it. I want to play farcry, doom3, hl2, CoD, and a lot of counterstrike 1.6 before I even begin FEAR, or CoD2. These cards tear through last gen games, so I think i'll enjoy whatever. Also, The main reason I am building a pc is for Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion so I hope to god whatever card I get will let me play it at 1600x1050.

SLI later?

Can't Building a Small Form Factor, I thought about the Shuttle sn26p, but I want an x-fi, and the physx so I need the upgradability.

With current drivers the XT implementation of FP16 HDR with AA is not going to be playable with new games. It is barely playable with Far Cry. Since you are not going 2 cards, and you game on an LCD with a pretty high native res, I recommend to get whatever is the fastest. If the rumors are true with the nVidia 512MB GTX/Ultra clocks (or even close), IMO you will be wasting your time with an XT.

do you seriously think that ATI is just gonna call it quits and not have something to compete with the new GTX??? hell in a driver update the xl surpassed the 7800GT i would wait for true benchmarks of optimized drivers for the xt to come out first, not to mention the overclockability of the new x1k series....id wait and see...

I have two games on my PC that are starving for a 512MB card and I'm pretty sure they wont be the only games to come out needing 512MB of RAM. Highest texture settings in both EQ2 and FEAR stutter like crazy on this XL with clockspeeds at XT speeds. Framerate is good.. but the stuttering is real and I do have to back down on texture quality in both these games when I have my resolution set high.

I wouldn't doubt the 512MB 7800GTX will be the same price the X1800XT is right now when it is released.

I love my X1800XL by the way.. it's a solid card. Good, stable framerates in games. IQ is as good as I would want it. If the XTs OC as high (percentage) as the XL, XT is going to be well worth the price.

Just my $0.02 ..
