I have an E6600 at stock clocks because it won't overclock for shit. Recent games aren't running as well as I'd like them to and I notice some slowness when doing lots of multitasking. Will I notice a difference if I upgrade to a quad core?

I have a Q6700 that wont overclock for nothig either. It on a d975xbx intel board, and the board itself is very limited to overclocking, was thinking about updating board so icould use pci-x 2.0 features or just going with the new I5 750. Sorry no help from me. Very limited on my knowledge on this stuff, hense the name.

if you upgraded to an i7 920, you would definitely see an improvement, maybe twice the framerate. if your funds are limited, go with the 750/p55. but dont bothe with an 860, the price difference between that and a 920/x58 is negligiable.

Depends on you're budget. Either way, it'll be a big improvement to your current Conroe.

Thanks. I'll probably go with the i5 then. Quick question: if I install a new mobo+CPU+RAM do I need to reinstall Windows?

yes you will have to reinstall windows. you always have to reinstall windows whenever changing the northbridge

but dont let that stop you. its only a clean install. i used to do them constantly, back when overclocking too high would corrupt your os.

If you can't get above stock 2.4ghz with that E6600, then jump for a i5/i7 and OC it!

FYI I'm still running a 3+ year old E6600 moderetly OCed. Serves me fine.
