I know I've bashed the PS3 before, but I wouldn't get the PS3 for games... Maybe MGS4, but that's it...

The problem is, I love HD-DVD, but Blu-ray gets so many more releases and I'd like to get in on the action.

And the PS3 player is one of the best and the cheapest on the market.

And if it ever got some good games...

well for a blu-ray player you can't really beat it.

I'm not currently impressed with blu-ray vs HD-dvd in my opinion, but if I couldn't compare I'd probably be very very content with it.

You'd eventually have some games for it. It is a pretty impressive piece of technology. If you're debating, I think you'd be happy with it, especially since you're considering it for movies.

I am currently very impressed with both. IMO you can't go wrong with either one in terms of quality.

Only problem is, the damn blu-ray gets so many more releases :(

Why not? I plan on getting a PS3 because I like the PS3 exclusives better, and can still enjoy the cross-platform goodness. And I'm not a huge multiplayer gamer anyways (and wouldn't pay for Live), so PSN ftw.

And the inner nerd/student in me thinks that having a chance to play with a next-gen processor using PS3 linux could be really fun and awesome.

Honestly, I think they are going to drop the price by the end of the year. They are getting too much pressure from developers to do so, even though it will hit them even harder in the pocketbook. If you can wait a bit, keep your eye on the price of standalone players. They are starting to come down in price. If you must have a Blu-Ray player soon or right now, the PS3 is your best choice. The console portion has some games right now, less value if you have a 360 because some of them are multiplatform, but it will gain greater value next year when its big hitting games come out.

The only warning I give is that I am always cautious about using a console a video player. I'd be worried about wearing out the drive on a unit that will be very expensive to replace. If you get a cheaper standalone unit later, chances are that it will last longer, and you won't be crying that your out of warranty game system AND Blu-Ray player both need to be repaired. Before people come out of the woodwork and say "I used my PS2 or Xbox as a DVD player and never had any problems", I'm just saying this from my experience and that of people I know. Those that used the drives on their systems alot for not just games dramatically reduced the lifespan of the drive. Game systems seem to be more demanding of the drives that are in them and wear them out faster than standalone video players.

As new games start coming out the PS3 will shine more and more as a game console, but it already shines as an HD movie player. It's very much worth it to pick up a PS3 for that reason ... it might be more expensive than a stand-alone Blu-ray player but look at what else you get with it for your money.

I feel that the PS3 is picking up popularity ... the next 6 months are really going to help that out. You won't go wrong with your investment and you'll thank yourself every time you watch a Blu-ray movie.

HD DVD has really been on the ball with releases lately - the two are probably about even in terms of available titles. Blu-Ray is about to release the first two "Pirates" flicks, and I'm currently enjoying the Ultimate Matrix Collection on HD DVD. I would encourage you to check out AVSForum before you make a decision. You'll find some rabid fans there, but you'll also get the information you need to make an informed buy.

I can appreciate the PS3 as an outstanding [read: the best] Blu-Ray player, but your notion that PS3 popularlity is growing is unsubstantiated. In recent months sales of the PS3 have slowed in both Japan and N. America. Compare this to the Wii which is white hot and the 360 which is steady saleswise and I'm curious as to how you came to this conclusion.

After waiting a bit to see what the game lineup was shaping up to be for the end of this year going into next, I made my decision the other day.

Gonna go pick up a PS3 today after work.

There are enough good games out now that I personally like (isn't that the whole reason to buy any given system?), to tide me over until the new stuff starts rolling out in the fall and winter.

If you like the games, buy the system is my logic.

Personally I'll probably be waiting until 2008. That's when all the decent games look to be hitting. All going to plan there should be a price cut by then too.

The PS3 is also a good choice for blu-ray players currently as its the only one guaranteed to be upgradeable to the Profile 1.1 spec that becomes mandatory (for new players) this november. It requires that players can decode 2 video and 2 audio streams simultaniously and that they have 256MB of storage, its mainly for commentary and other special features though.

The PS3 does have some good exclusives for future releases (FFXIII is a prime example) but theres nothing driving people to buy the console now. Its really this fall/winter where we'll see if the PS3 can pick up the pace of system sales with the release of quite a few first party and exclusive AAA titles.

Because I see new posts like this every week. :) More people are starting to consider the PS3, regardless of what the damn sales figures say. The PS3 still beat the 360 in Japan, and in North America, the games library is what's really holding it back right now.

I know tons of people considering a PS3 [myself included], but the numbers don't add up right now. Unfortunately, we have to go by something more concrete such as those silly, damn sales figures.

I have been threatening my wife I was gonna buy one for the last few months. Finally last Friday I bought one. Got Motorstorm and have been having a blast. Got Fight Night Round 3 from Gameznflix and my thumb has a blister from playing so much. I think its a great system, pricy yes but screw it, I paid more for video cards that dont last as long.

My oldest son has the 360 and he got tired of me taking it to my room to play Guitar Hero when he wanted to play Gears of War. My youngest son has the Wii, and the PS3 is in my bedroom, so for the last few days we have all been in my room, but I am sure soon they will go back to their rooms to play the other systems.

I think all are good systems, I enjoy each one for seperate reasons, but the one that is in my room is my favorite. (Meaning any of them that I can play when I want)

The ps3 is built like a tank. It's loaded. It isn't even done launching yet. Just launched in India and will be launching soon in S.korea.
S.korea by the way is one of the most if not the most connected country in the world. Plus it's the home of HD display manufacturers Samsung and LG Lots of their shows are broadcast in High Def.

I think if you can afford it, its a very good buy.

Okay...

Does PS3 have a VGA connector like Xbox360? Or dvi connector?

I'd honestly rather connect it to dvi or vga then hdmi, which is a worse connection...

I could get a hdmi to dvi connector, but that would just be a hassle I'd rather avoid.

If I must use hdmi, I guess it's okay...

I'd just wait and see. I don't think it's worth it quite yet.

I have to admit, yesterday I found myself checked for a PS3 VGA adapter to see if I could hook it up to a monitor(turns out I just need a HDMI to VGA adapter). But then I stopped, I realized I was on the road to shelling out a huge chunk of money on an impulse. Folklore and Uncharted are really the only 2 exclusives that I'm interested in, and they're not even released yet. I'm close to buying, but I'm still not there yet. Money shouldn't be spent lightly.

I say just wait until you're certain you want a PS3, without having to second-guess the expenditure. Luxuries can always wait, they're just as good later on. Saving money is always a safe choice due to the incredible power of compound interest. Money saved as a teen or young adult turns into a buttload of money later on And who knows? Maybe by the time the PS3 becomes so appealing that you can't resist, it'll also have come down in price.

Edit: HDMI to DVI adapter. My bad.

I am not sure what you mean by a worse connection but the only cable it comes with is a composit cable all other connections are thru after market cables. I have seen component ( HD) cables and I would be very surprized if there were no DVI or VGA cable available. I will do a search and if I find them I will post you a link.

I thought HDMI was the best connection? I think you would be happy with HDMI, and that brings up a complaint or nit if you will. How do you sell a console thats marketed around hd and sells for $600 AND NOT INCLUDE A DAMN HD CABLE?

sorry for yelling, that just irks me the nth degree.

I'm trying to get one as a BR player- it just 'happens' to play games Gotta get it past the Comptroller General-my 8 month pregnant wife. Looks a go for June if I trade in the PS2

I'm looking at it as a BR player first. It's still considered the best BR player out there. With all of the features they built into it, it'll have a longer life than the 360 IMHO (and I own a 360) I don't really care a bout the exclusives. (Halo etc)

I'm looking forward to Stranglehold and the Indy Game- both cross platform Only issues is that each vendor locks you into their online scheme. Even with XBL Gold, I'm not warm and fuzzy about online. Actullay

Crackdown is all that I play on the 360 for now

MGS4 isn't coming out until March 31, 2008.

One of the most anticipated games of this generation gets dated. Today konami released their financial report for the fiscal year and on that list it has been become clear that Metal Gear Solid Guns of the Patriot will be coming out on March 31, 2008.

I'd wait if I were you...

Yikes, I'd have to agree. PS3 will have done one of two things by then, either a)it'll have a price drop or b) it'll be so far behind MGS will come to 360 anyway, making it a moot point. After all, the bottom line is the almighty profit, and if the corporate heads at Konami decide they need a bigger audience for MGS4 to turn a profit, they'll order the devs to port it whether they want to or not.

Jebus.

DVI = HDMI absolutely with the exception that HDMI carries audio data as well. There is HDCP DVI now, so both have a protected pathway as well (I believe.)

VGA and Component are also pretty much identical, one is RGB colorspace, the other is YPbPr, both are analog, and both start losing visibly to digital cabling at resolutions around 1080i/p.

And yeah, kinda cheap not to toss in a HDMI cable with an expensive console, but IIRC, you can use your old PS2 components if you've got 'em, and HDMI cables are like $8 on monoprice anyways.

*EDIT* Argh, one thing I forgot.

I don't know if HDMI has pins dedicated to carrying analog video data like DVI-(forgot the variant) does. On a DVI connector, its the four-offset pins that look a cross, IIRC it's Red, Green, Blue, Ground; HSync, Vsync, DDC and others are on a few of the other pins.

Play all the consoles and see what you think. To me its not worth it getting it for just the bluearray player in it. Hddvd has just as many movies as bluearray practically these days. The standalone players are cheaper now. If it were me, i would get the console for the games. As it is right now it isn't as shiney as the wii and 360. Just try them all and see what you think ;)

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I may wait. I'll wait for a price drop, and for it to be closer for MGS4's release. Perhaps then these things may happen:

1: More good games will be available.
2. Blue ray will start to really pick up, and have as many releases as dvd (I just hope it doesn't kill hd--dvd :( )
3: Slim model will be available.

I'll eventually get it, but not yet.

well the slim model is some years away considering the power requirements and the heat these new gen systems throw.

As for Blue-Ray dont only look at it as a movie player you have to look at it for the capacity it provides for game makers. It will give way to better cinimatics and better uncompressed audio. Also the number of titles to come out in BR will never equal regular DvD Titles in the near future anyway. This stupid war between the 2 formats is only hurting the consumer. Most if not all of the major Studios have signed exclusive aggreements for the High Definition Content. So until those deals expire don't expect to see Pirates of the Caribean on HD-DVD or Smokeing Aces on Blue-Ray

As a side note. I for one would rather there be an option to use MP3s on my PS3's HD instead of the soundtrack provided with most games. It may be because I am too old but the choice of songs on Fightnight Round 3 and Madden are not to my likeing.

I'm sure with time features like this will be added. FirmWare 1.80 is about to come out... I"m sure they have a huge "things to do list"....

err? Usually that is something that games implement, not the console itself. I would suspect this is a feature you might see in GTA4, if anywhere. I wouldn't hold your breath for it as a "console feature".

You know, Sony might actually have quite a plan sticking blu-ray in the PS3. Years from now when walmart has blu-ray players for $30 people will still be paying $100's for PS3's.

Well PS3 owners just got upscaling on all DVD's via HDMI up to 1080P. All PS2/PSX games are also upscaled with a version of smoothing (interpolation?) that helps add some filtering to the game and makes them look much much nicer.

We can also set up our WinXP/Vista computers as a server via WMP11 and throw video/music/pictures and view them which is nice. We can also print the pictures from a USB printer too. Good stuff. I can't wait for the 2.00 update that's said to be released in a few months.

All in all i'm happy with my PS3 and it just keeps getting better. It was off to a slow start but now it's great. I never regretted the purchase honestly and I've had it since December. We just have to wait for some of the games to start rolling out but i'm not worried about that at all.
