Right now I have my e6600 overclocked to 3.4ghz @ 1.39375v. It idles at mid 40's C. I'm not sure what load is when playing a game or whatever, but probably in the 50's. I'm using a Zalman 9500. It seemed like my temps were a little high? Are they? I thought maybe my hsf wasn't getting good contact and maybe not right amount of AS5 so I've tried reseating and regreasing with AS5 several times. Maybe I just have a hot chip or maybe a thermal sensor is wrong. Idling at about 45 C and then restaring immediately and going to bios says 30 C. Which do I believe? Bios or Core Temp which i've been using or nvidia monitor which is reading 40 C. I don't get it. My bro has same setup as me, same overclock and his idle temp at 3.4ghz @ 1.38v is like 33-34 C. I don't get it. How can mine be that much more off?

Now to the main question. Am I going to need to water cool this cpu in order to drop temps to low 30's C. Would water cooling drop my temps that low? How many 120mm radiators would I need to do that? 1 or 2? I have a Silverstone TJ09 case and it has 2 exaust fans up top which could fit 2 120mm rads. It won't fit a 240 rad because a gap between the fans. Any ways, would a 120mm rad on each fan up top be enough or maybe a different setup to get my temp down to low 30's? Suggestions on the water cooling setup would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

Hey bud,

For more accurate temperatures, download either Intel's Thermal Analysis Tool (TAT) or CoreTemp. It takes temperatures from the sensors located inside the CPU's IHS. ALMOST accurate. Rest assured, it's a helluva lot accurate than the mobo's temp sensors.

As far as the temps that water cooling would bring . . . we would need to know what your ambient temperature in your room is (room with pc) and what TAT/CoreTemp is showing for both your idle and load temps.

You can download sp2004 orthos to check your temps while at load. Run a small-ffts test in orthos and have TAT or CoreTemp running when you run the test. It'll show you what your temps are at load :). Once downloaded and opened, orthos will put your cpu at a 100% load. While it's running the test, check your temps.

jnick : Unfortunately the tolerances for the temperature sensors inside the CPU are just as shitty as the tolerances for the motherboard thermistors. Your looking at plus or minus 5C, that is a 10C temperature swing. Now the one inside the CPU does have a better placement, but they are still far from accurate.

To the OP, what do you expect or wish to gain from moving to water cooling?
 
Meh, I suppose.

However, the bottom line is that the internal sensors are closer to the actual temps than the mobo sensors, which is what I'm trying to get across. It appears to me that he is using his motherboard sensors, in which case the temps he stated may be no where close to the actual temps (like you stated, 10C).

Unfortunately, right now the closest thing to actual core temp is TAT/Core Temp.
