Should i change?

Hi everybody!
Well i have a Hiper Type-R 580W, and i'm gonna buy a 8800GT or maybe a 8800GTS (G92), and i'd like to know if i must change the psu or if my psu can andle the new grafic card.

Their power usage should be very similar. If you aren't having any problems with your current setup, you should be good to go with what you have. Although I question the wisdom of switching to a 8800GTS (G92) from a 8800GT (also G92). There is a performance increase, but I don't think it is worth the cash.

If you have an SLI compatible motherboard, then a second 8800GT is a more efficient upgrade cost wise that will provide more performance. If not then by all means go for it, but I'd advise waiting until the Geforce 9-Series parts come out first.

Both would be a nice upgrade from the 7900gs. Both 8800 series will need about 400w and 22-24amps on the 12v rails and yours has 30 amps, so you are good to go.

I also have a Type R 580w psu and i am running two 7600GT's more than happily so i would think that a single 8800gt would be fine as i believe the 7600gt's werent exactly power efficient. (looking at my temps i can believe that)

I also have quite a large over clock on my processor, a fairly power hungry overclocking mobo, two HDD's, 4gigs ddr 2 6400 ram, a fan controller and display plus about 4 system fans in total.

Im looking to upgrade to a single 8800gt (probably the asus 8800GT Top 512mb Version) with the intention of sli in the near future (i love SLi and dont care what anyone else says about it as it virtually doubled my fps in some of my games) and dont expect to change my supply but i may be proven wrong when the time comes.

unfortunately that psu wont handle an 8800 gt/gts sli setup,

Thanks for the info, my second idea was to get one of those thermal take power supplies that fit in an empty 5.25" drive bay but it means extra cabling. I only built my pc 8 months ago and didnt have any intention of upgrading and especially not the psu, but now i want a better cpu and the two 8800gt's. Im looking at getting the AMD 6000+as im locked with AMD (due to Mobo obviously) and cant afford to go the equivalent intel cpu route with the added expense of a new mobo, which from what i read would only give 5% more performance anyway.

I really dont want to change my PSU as i have done a really good job of cable tidying using spiral wrap (i used to work in the aerospace industry doing that sort of thing.

You are correct, I mis-read the original post. In any case unless he has a ton of drives, he should be ok with either one card. (Unless that PSU is a total POS, I don't know anything about it.)
