I recently got a gigabyte ds3 and a E6300 and overclocked the E6300 to 3.09 Ghz.

After 4 hours and 3 minutes of Orthos i got an error in one of the cores. So I bumped the overclock down to 3.00 Ghz exactly.

Since it took 4 hours to error at the higher clock, can i consider the minor downclock stable?

Or should i just run Orthos for another 5 hours or so? :eek:

I found that Orthos is not even close to putting the stress on your system as Intel Thermal Anaylsis Tool (TAT). TAT will bring your system to its knee. If you think your system is stable doing Orthos, give TAT a try. If it can take about a couple of hours of TAT, I'd say your system is good to go.
 
I used to define "stable" as in "is it gonna let me play 5 hrs straight of multi-player Q3 without crashing...?" :p Now days it's minimum overnight ORTHOS + 3Dmark01in a constant loop just so I don't feel like I'm cheating... :D Otherwise I'd have ~3.6GHz listed in my sig.
But again, it all depends on what you want out of your PC. If it runs fine during your normal usage and keeps running under a few hrs of stress at a time, be happy with it.
ORTHOS is a e-p0enis killer if you ask me... :eek: :D
 
Ran 2 hours of TAT, in which the processor got up to like 77 C. No Errors or anything though.

That scared the crap out of me and i really hope it did'nt mess up the processor too much :(

and after i ended the test speedfan is now showing the processor at 29 C.

One thing i did notice is that core 0 runs 5 degrees hotter then core 1, is that something I should be concerned about :confused:

Long term at that temp will do some damage, but for a couple of hours, I don't think so. Any typical applications, including games, will not stress the CPU as much as TAT. I think you are good to go. Core0 is about 3-5 ºC higher then Core1, on my e6600 as well. If you look at Core Temp, the temp is about the same for both cores.

People have different opinions when it comes to what "stability" means. For some people, being able to play Game XYZ for 5 hours straight is stable, for others 48 hours of nonstop testing with prime/ orthos or whatever, is required, since they want to make sure that the results that they send back to F@H are indeed accurate.
In the end, the requirements for stability are very much dependent on the application. Do you really care if the occasional rocket in the laster shooter game is slightly off due to a rounding error? Probably not; however if a stock exchange server rounds slightly incorrectly people can lose significant amounts of money. Even worse things may happen in the medical field.

To answer your question: why not run a "stability test" overnight with the new configuration, to be sure that it is indeed stable?
