I have a PII/PIII Dell Optiplex GX1 that I picked up a while ago for $5 :) I was thrilled to get it for that price! Anyways, I currently have a 433MHz PII in there, and I was thinking about upgrading it for folding. I could either overclock it to 500MHz and up, or I could buy a slocket to convert it to a socket 370. Then I could pop in a 1GHz chip there. I'm thinking even though the bus speed is slow, the CPU speed is what really matters. Would buying a slocket (on eBay for like $10 after shipping) and a new chip be a good idea, or a waste of money?

Anyone have any personal experience with a Slot1 to 370 slocket?

you can buy socket ones up to 1ghz as well (p3) if your mb supports it...

You mean slot, right? My motherboard is a Slot 1 type. On Dell's spec sheet, it lists a PIII 600 my highest possible speed.

Then that's when I ran across the slocket thing, and found out that I could almost double that and put a 370 1GHz chip in (with the same bus speed as the 600).

yea slot one.. im tired.

Tell you what..

I have a couple spare 370 boards around... find yourself a better chip and ill even pay for shipping to get the mb to you..

I don't think the BIOS will support the faster CPU and it either won't boot or will boot at 600mhz

I'll send you a 600MHz P3 (Slot 1) for the cost of shipping... overclock that.

i have a 600 slot one too... but if you want to bump up to slot 370 1ghz...

well i have a socket 370 board that you can get a 1ghz chip / ram for and set it up
(1ghz max speed like 133fsb i think... not OC'able)

if you just wanted to get a faster machine going

I've got a socket 478 board laying around that I no longer have a processor for. If you are going to fold for the Horde I would be willing to donate it.

edit: I just updated my profile to accept e-mails, so shoot me an e-mail if you are interested. If you could pitch a few bucks for shipping, cool... if not I could send it when I get paid.
