Should I avoid a z68 modo if....

From what I am reading, one should avoid a z68 mobo a ssd 64gb in size or bigger is used as the sole drive, because the ssd caching function of the z68 mobo will mess with it. Anyone knows if this is correct?

I was going to buy a gygabite z68 but because of this, and the fact that P67 is cheaper, im thinking of going with P67.

What's a good P67 mobo for an OC 2500k? (I know Asus P8P67 is good but its 175$ in Canada, I'd like cheaper)

Actually, there is no need to avoid Z68 if you're going to simply use a larger-capacity SSD for the OS and programs. It's just that you will simply not be able to take advantage of the SSD caching feature, which would be disabled anyway if the OS is only on an SSD.

As for Asus' P67 boards being "good", you are partially wrong: The Asus P67 boards have had more than their fair share of quality control and reliability issues, with the RMA and return/exchange rate being higher (relative to even the large number of boards sold) than the average for P67 mobos. In other words, Asus has churned out more than their fair share of 'lemons' among P67 boards.

Okay, so to make sure, if i use a 128 ssd as my sole drive, z68's ssd caching WILL NOT automatically be turned on (it will be disabled)?

The worst case scenario is that you would have to go into the BIOS/UEFI to manually disable it. It shouldn't be that hard to do.

Yes, the SSD caching will be disabled. It will only work if you have a conventional mechanical hard drive for the OS and programs plus a small SSD for caching.

As for the ASUS boards and others, well, there is always a chance you will have issues, nothing is perfect afterall, I like ASUS myself due to the very good customer support times, and RMA if you need it, they generally treat you far better then some other makers.

I can tell a horror story of Asrock that happened lately to my buddy, but suffice it to say, I would never get anything from them hearing the way he was treated.

ASUS P8Z68-V are supposed to be quite good, there is less pricey of course, but I have not heard overall of any issues directly related to these.

I don't even think sdd caching is in the bios at least I haven't seen it on my asus z68 board. As far as I know it is all in the intel drivers that you load once you are in windows. (Could be wrong on this though).

Ether way I am using a 128gb ssd as my main drive with no caching drive on an asus z68 board and have had no problems. I didn't have to set up anything to not use caching either.

Have built 2 systems with Gigabyte boards and there is no issue. The SSD caching will only happen if you set it up that way. Just make sure you hook the drive up to a SATAIII (6gb) connector and set mode to AHCI in BIOS.
