Should Dell sell AMD based computers?

they should, but they wont, intel would get bitchy and throw dell in the dog house. dog house= no more uber cheap processors for dell

on that note though, i saw an athlon64 notebook at best buy that was manufactured by gateway... i think thats the second time theyve gone over to AMD, i (had*) a gateway tower with an athlon 950 in it...

*that thing was such a peice of shit i resorted to smashing hte motherboard with a hammer.. thats why you dont by prebuilt period :)

I've long wanted Dell to sell AMD based systems, but know they wouldn't for the reasons Lithium has stated.

I've already posted in the SA area, but yeah... I really wish they would offer AMD systems.

This would be the single biggest win AMD would make, to get into Dell systems.

Yes. IMO having a choice is usually better. But it appears that alot of people whose choice is AMD build their own, so why sell them.

It's a little more complex than that. Dell gets processors cheap from Intel by staying exclusive (and matching AMD's prices), of course but that's not the only incentive.

Intel offers manufacturers advertising money (Intel logo and sound in ads), but only if the computer series is Intel only. For example, if Dell advertises the "Dimension" series in ads with the Intel logo, they will get x number of dollars (~30%, IIRC) from Intel for advertising since the Dimension series only uses Intel processors. If Dell were to add AMD processors, they would need to create a new series of systems and advertise those separately in order to keep the Dell advertising dollars. That is a significant amount of money to lose.

Secondly, creating a whole series of systems, doing validation, etc without the support of the CPU manufacturer (AMD doesn't do that like Intel does) is a whole new set of costs. Sure Dell could do it, but what's the incentive? Intel has matched any discount AMD has offered Dell.

Lastly, most of you wouldn't buy a Dell AMD system anyways, even those partial to AMD processors. You get no control over low level RAM timings, no overclocking, etc. I don't mind it since the computers are so cheap on sale, but most others here do nothing but complain about Dell. I think the only reason some want Dell to make AMD systems is because they drool over price mistakes ($200 systems). :p

i know its more complex than that, but i didnt want to type all that :p

my comment was simply stating that is definatly not in dell's best interest to start offering AMD systems. they would loose money on purchasing processors, they would loose money on advertising their systems, they would loose money in not selling those systems (honestly, if you were an idiot, would you want the super hyped 3.2ghz p4, or the 1.8ghz Athlon s939 3000+?) most people would go for the p4, because the mhz myth has been so enforced by intel's netburst.

i also agree that any AMD enthusiest would not buy a dell system based around AMD... in all of our opinions(well.. most, there are a few in the Video Card forum.. ) dell sucks, and i can see them making NO money by selling Athlon systems.

heh I have a gateway mini tower here with an amd k6-2 :X

I think dell should, but I wouldn't count on it happening in my lifetime. Dell and intel have a good relationship.

I think most us here at HardOCP would not buy a Dell AMD system, but we're talking small bucks in those terms. Dell wants small and medium sized businesses to purchase systems. When you get a company to buy from you, you can get tens or hundreds of sales per year. That's where it starts to be profitable. Yes, I would buy AMD Dell systems for use at work, but I don't think it's a smart decision for their bottom line because of the costs involved (as stated by earlier people in this thread).

Plus the new Dell Intel systems are UBER hot, and the fans make alot more noise. My users are complaining about it too -- "My old computer was so quiet. This one is nice and faster, but is it supposed to be this loud?"

Now let's talk about Dell servers based on AMD Opteron processors.

It's my opinion that Opteron offerings from Dell is inevitable. The Opteron will clearly have performance leadership for the next 12 to 18 months. Its enterprise and cluster support has picked up drastically, as shown by major contracts with Sun, IBM, HP/Compaq, major universities, and research facilities. I would say that Dell's most lucrative market with respect to AMD would clearly be its enterprise and small business customers.
