Going to go with the E4300 and a gigabyte DS3, what 1gb x 2 memory and case with power supply would get it done to turnkey 3+ghz?

For me, I am going with a 4300 and a Giga S3 and 1GB G.Skill memory. If you don't plan on gaming or buying a highend video card, any 350w-400w PSU will do. Check the PSU forum for a list of good brands.

As for 2x GB RAM, there is a OCZ deal that is $180 something after rebates and a G.Skill deal that is 170 something after rebate.

OK a good way to save is get your power supply and case for free after rebate! Just keep your eyes open, look on outpost.com tigerdirect.com and newegg.com

Don't be in too much of a hurry. Good deals come and go and don't last long

Don't be too picky it's fine to listen to peoples opinion but don't be scared off by the power supply nazi's either :D You are the one spending the money

I give you a hint a great deal I got is back in stock today, I can vouch for this Ultra power supply and case they are good quality

For overclocking, a cheap PSU spells disaster. Mainly in the form of your pocketbook as you replace parts.

I'll chime in as well. I used to use the stock PSUs that tended to come with the generic cases (this was awhile back, 2000-2002) and, after overclocking, I always wondered why I had stability issues.

Years later I was ready to admit to myself that by being a cheapskate on the PSU I was cheating myself out of performance. If you can get an Antec case w/ a 450W PSU for a good price, I think it'd be trustworthy.

But I just bought a whole new system's worth of parts from Newegg last night and ended up going with a Hiper HPU-4K580-M 580W for $90. I didn't really want to spend that much on a PSU but all the reviews I read were great, it has a killer design and even though it's modular the voltages do not fluctuate.

Don't skimp on the PSU...take it from a former skimper. ;)

Well first the Ultra V-Series that I mentioned currently sells for $60 on sale at TigerDirect but you can get it for free from Frys's. I just found a great deal on it and $0 sure beats $60. It is not a "generic" power supply per se. But it is a no frills power supply with nothing extra spent on bling. If you look at the one you bought 580 watts for $89 I'm sure it is a very fine PSU but that fancy plastic carrying case, shiny LED fans, the cable sheathing and those shiny retro-looking chrome screw in connectors do not add anything to the performance of what you purchased, only the looks. They are appearance items. They also add to the cost. Which is fine nothing wrong with buying a shiny pretty thing. But our friend here is looking for a "C2D budget setup"

I agree with you that a power supply needs to supply stable enough 12V power at the amperage that you need to get the job done. And it needs some thermal overload protection and surge protection. This Ultra 500W delivers that in my experience.

I have done very well myself in stablilty overclocking with this particular Ultra 500W power supply. My newest result (yesterday) is E3400 @3848 MHz which is the new [H]ardForum speed record for air-cooled E6400 by a pretty good margin.
