Just a shot in the dark but, If a drive fails this "industry standard" or so I read, is it as good as dead or could a format and reinstall of xp help?

its a dell laptop thats doing it and the diagnostics prog that came with it always fails this test and now it wont boot xp after I've run chdsk and fixboot and fixmbr from the recovery console.
