Shopping For A UPS

My power drops every now and then for no real reason, at least not any that the power company can give me. Granted, it only drops for a couple of seconds but my main machine is a server and this can be a real pain in the ass if I'm gone. So, all this UPS needs to do is keep it on for a few seconds until the power kicks back on and maybe five minutes so if it's going to be longer I can get to it and shut it down.

Now, I've been looking at APC but they are rather expensive. However, CyberPower caught my eye and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with them? Also, feel free to post up some suggestions. I do NOT want the power strip style UPSs. The system specs are in my sig on the left.

I like APC since they have been good to me. I had a 5 or 6 year old Backups Pro 1000 that died on me, and the batteries bulged up. emailed APC support to help diagnose the issue with the UPS before I ordered new batteries since the UPS would beep and then shut down. Unit was out of warranty as well.

APC support asked for the serial number, then asked for my shipping info and overnighted me this UPS for free,

Another vote for Cyberpower. I have the 600W model and that is enough to last me ~10m (6mins if I hookup my 24" LCD). If you want more the 810W is about $150.

Our apc's have never been a problem, our tripplites and cyberpowers on the other hand... That's why I use an apc on my home machine. .

Have had the Cyberpower 1500VA AVR LCD for nearly two years and loving it. It's running my desktop and an always-on media server. Works great, and the auto-shutdown signaling to the server works perfectly.

My suggestion is a APC Smart UPS 1400 or 1500. These can be had usually for less than $200 used on eBay with new batteries. These are server grade and have double the runtime of consumer grade UPSs since they use 2 18AH batteries instead of 9 AH or 2 7.2 AH batteries. New these were over $400 US.

Here is one link:

There were others being sold for much less but did not have new batteries.
