Shimmering fixed on 7800GTX!

I have a friend who works for nVidia who gave me the 78.03 beta drivers today, which fix the "shimmering" thart occurred between mipmap boundaries in some games. (apparently they just released these drivers to a limited number of reviewers for testing recently, which I imagine Brent could confirm)

Anyway, he said I could post about them and I know this issue concerned some of you.
I installed them and fired up some BF2 and UT2004 on levels I saw the shimmering before.

Bear in mind I never thought it was a big deal and didn't even notice it till I went looking for it. When I play a shooter I'm at 16X12 4X8X at least on my 7800GTX SLI, not some crap 10X7 8x like that German website.

Anyway, the shimmers were gone in high quality mode where I had found them before, so it looks like nV is on the right track with these drivers.

Thought some of you might like to know.

Some skeptics have speculated the fix for the is bug would result in massive loss of framerate, or that the bug itself was intentional for initial review benchmarking purposes. My play earlier tonite, and the following benches, convinced me this is a driver bug that has been addressed. The gentleman at nVidia asked me to note that these are pre-production drivers that they are still testing, but my experiences so far show them solid.

HL2 16X12 4X8X Quality 77.72 4X8X High Q 77.74 4X8X High Q 78.03 (shimmer fixed)
at_c17_12...................61....................58...........................58
at_canals_08...............93....................76...........................76
at_prison_05...............97....................96...........................96

I thought some HL2 would be good because people noticed this a lot in CSS. (which I don't have) Anyway, it's pretty clear at HL2 there is no mythical 30% performance reduction.

It's really apparent in World of Warcraft... because of the open spaces and lots of texture.

very anxious to try these with gtr, the shimmering in that game is by far the worst out of all of them. I wonder how big the performance hit is "IF" they actually fixed it.

LOL

I don't care if you believe me or not. The drivers are beta version 78.03 and fix the shimmering issue and the application override issue on some games.

I have a friend who ended up at nV and can give me bits and pieces of info now and again, and get me a deal on reference cards. I'm running two reference 7800GTXs in my main rig, and and two reference 6800GTs in my secondary.

This will be on the net soon enough, my buddy said they gave the drivers out to a "limited number of reviewers". No need to be rude.

I will ask them tomorrow if they mind if I post benches. (remember, I'm just a guy that's not really supposed to have this yet)

I will tell you that based on the UT2004 I was just playing I don't know if it affected performance at that at all. They told me it was a few percentage points at some games.

glad to see that when the gamers make a lot of noise about a problem nvidia steps up to the plate and addresses it. way to go nvidia.

You're kidding, right? The shimmering in San Andreas is a deliberate pixel shading effect. "Heat haze." If it bothers you, you can turn it off in the options. :p

look more closely... the shimmering is not throughout the whole game.. is more evident in Los santos area

Las aventuras is the section where shimmering is alot less visible

World of Warcraft is really the only game I ever noticed it in, and it bugs me to some extent. I'm glad they adressed this issue. I can't wait for these drivers. :D

Step 2 for Nv; lower the shimmering in the default Q mode to what Ati shows in their default mode, so we can see some apples to apples benchmarks in future.

Why dont you guys install the 78.11's and see for yourself...like me. :D
Those drivers are older than the 77.77s and have a lot of issues that were fixed in the 77.77s.

The newer ones are the 78.01s. Good image quality, but still shimmers.

Agree 100%. It's great they're looking into it but since they recommend that reviewers bench at quality that's where their focus should lie.

No NO, not that shimering, in GTA:SA Shimering is a HUGE problem, but I think its mainly a game issue not a driver issue,as I use an Radeon x850 and the shimering itr bad, it gets worse if you put it on 16 bit, and now its not the heat haze were talking about. :)

okay, i started GTA:SA up last night after this thread, and i did notice pretty noticeable shimmering. i didn't see it before i went looking for it... but now i'm gonna have a hard time not seeing it ... LOD clamp didn't really fix either.

bleh, as much as I love my 7800, i feel these optimizations are cause for legitimate concern. :(

Its good they they have fixed it, but abit of a downer if your still required to lose performance (using HQ) for the 'fix'.

Sorry, its not fixed if you have to set drivers the HQ.

LOL- because you say it isn't Ackmed/Fallguy/Emilee?

I think some/many would disagree with you. I bet if you post this at Rage3d you'll get lots of agreement!

I "lost performance" in 1/3 benches? ChrisRay didn't at all on 3dmark?

Maybe thats why I never seen this "shimming" before. I always run it on "High Quality" Who the hell keeps defaults on? Thats stupid. Any espically now with the 7800GTX... you would be stupid to run anything but the highest settings... i mean thats what the 600$ Video card is for... or maybe I am just stupid

Have you not been reading? It affects the 7800 no matter what settings. Sad you settle for so little.
