shielding to avoid rf/emi?

I am currently considering to build my own PC case. I haven't completely decided on materials yet, I could get acrylic and aluminim through a local shop faily inexpensive. Thin plywood (1/8) covers over a more solid flame is also a consideration (not in the market for a see through case, not even going to put a window in it (I know what's in my case, and that's all that matters to me ;) )).

Anyway, I couple folks here mentioned that they did stay away from acrylic because of RF/EMI issues. How large of a problem is this really? When constructing a plywood case, would a aluminim foil lining be sufficient to counter any RF/EMI issues?

As much as it is a concern, it probably isn't going to be much of an issue for any case ya build. I've never run into a problem with it at all.

Contrary what most people think, the conductive casing for PCs is mostly there to keep the PC's components from wreaking havoc with nearby (unshielded) equipment, although it does help with you've got a big, unshielded subwoofer sitting next to your PC :p

As long as you keep the PSU (switching PSUs are very noisy in terms of EMI) safely inside its metal case and stay away from large, external sources of EMI (such as high-voltage lines, high-powered radiotransmitters, etc.), there shouldn't be a problem :)

Mostly only a problem if you have a serious concern with foriegn militaries using airborne nuclear explosions to knock out your electronics.

I built my case out of 1/2" plywood and 2x4s and I haven't had any problems. It's under my desk along with a lot of power cables and my subwoofer. I've yet to have any problems. I did use the motherboard tray from my old case, which made mounting the MB a lot easier, but I doubt that really adds anything in the shielding department.

2x4s? Wow. I'd love to see that case!

It hangs from the underside of the desk.

[And sorry to bump an old thread. I haven't been here in a few days]
