Curious ive never really cared how loud my pc was back in my younger years but recently ive decided my new build needs to be abit quieter,

Question are there any stock case ( i dont like to mod case) that effectivly dampen computer noise?

or would my money be better spent simply buying passivly cooled video and computer coolers to decrease computer noise ?

suggested cases welcomed thx.
 
antec p180b has triple layed walls and all 120mm fans all ruber mounted hdds all the little things to make it quite and it is
 
p180b does a really good job for a stock case. Make sure to get a large CPU heatsink and a quiet power supply to go with it.
 
If you want some serious quiet, this case will do it, but it's pricey and you can't run anything that's going to generate tons and tons of heat. Link
 
I had the Antec P180 when first released. Now that I own a Lian Li, it makes the Antec feel cheap, thin, flimsy & light.
Go with something trusted & tried. Aluminum construction, with at least 1x 120mm intake & 1x 120mm exhaust. I know what you mean about not caring about fan noise before. I gave my old rig to a friend......i dont know how i ever got used to those screaming 80mm fans......compared to my rig now.
Heatpipes are fine, but just keep in mind should a fan fail........always good to have some additional air circulation going on.
 
Basically, there are three ways to reduce noise. Here they are in order of preference:
1) Get quiet or silent components--fans, hard drives, HSFs, etc.
2) Make those components quieter if necessary--rubber grommets for hard drives, anti-vibration mountings for fans and PSUs, run the fans on a lower voltage, etc.
3) If you've done #1 and #2 right, you probably won't need this one, but the last line of defense is noise-dampening material

Do all case fans hum when speed controlled with a rheo?

Mine are loud in air flow when on high but almost equally annoying when the electric motor hums wildly from being de-tuned.

Is this just a symptom of cheap fans?

Usually, the hum is only when the fan speed is controlled by PWM, not a rheostat. It's more a sign of a poorly-designed fan controller than a bad fan. If you want your fans to spin at a single fixed (reduced) speed, a plain, fixed-value resistor is probably best.

Personal suggestions:
Cases: Antec Solo/P150, P180/182
Hard drives: Samsung Spinpoint T series (SATA), enable AAM
Video cards: something passive, or install an aftermarket cooler. Zalman VF-900, Thermalright fanless models, etc.
Fans: Yate Loon 120mm wherever you can, undervolt with fan controller / pin mod. Mount said fans with rubber screws/grommets
CPU HSF: Scythe Ninja + low speed Yate Loon (or go passive with a P180?)
Case lining: acoustic foam and/or car noise insulation sheets
Hard drive suspension: look into it @ SPCR ... elastic in 5.25" bay, or sit drives on the bottom of the case (on top of a reasonably thick piece of foam)
Power supply: Seasonic S12 series, Corsair HX series, Antec Neo HE <=430w
 
The Antec SOLO is great for this.

It's somewhat compact so you may still want to do the P180 if you need space. But if not, it makes it easier to silence while keeping solid cooling - it's at once quieter and cooler than the P180/182s. It incorporates some relevant features that the P180 lacks, up to and including drive suspension.
