Sharp sampling 4K notebook screens...

They might as well release 16K notebook screens.

As long as laptops mostly use TN or poor IPS panels with 6-bit colour and <700:1 (average closer to 500:1) contrast it's pointless.

Have you checked out the Lenovo W530 or the soon to ship W540? The resolutions aren't UHD, but they might have the panels you are looking for.

The W540 in particular has a 2880 x 1620 screen and is available with an integrated X-Rite color calibrator. I haven't seen specs on the gamut coverage of the new screen.

The older model has a lower res screen (FHD 1920 x 1080), but still has an integrated calibrator available which covers 95% of the Adobe RGB gamut.
 
The only sensibly priced IPS laptop I could find is a rebranded Clevo W540EU ultrabook but it's only capable of 500:1 and is 6-bit. Everything short of spending silly money is nearly all TN bar a very few VAs.
