I recently began dual-booting winxp and gentoo linux, as I just swore that XP will be the last M$ product I ever install.

My question is: If I put my windows client on an FAT32 partition, can I have the linux folding client use the same work directory, thereby having a continuous work queue regardless of what OS I'm currently in?

it should be possible. just put the linux version in there too, then make sure the fat32 partition gets mounted at boot in linux and it runs it. i'm not sure if it would like that, though... it might complain. i haven't tried it, so... good luck.

k, I'll give it a shot while I'm still on this tiny 59 pointer...
::crosses fingers::

Success!

...well, once I found that I had 'ro' in my fstab for that partition

for some reason, fah needed write access to the drive :p

yeah, write access tends to help for saving results. just a bit, maybe.

glad to hear it works... this info should get put in a sticky somewhere or something for future reference (this means you, DR_K13:p)

and i know what you mean about windows XP... it doesn't even like having its partition changed from a logical to a primary one. so now i have to reinstall EVERYTHING... cause it doesn't give an easy option for rewriting the boot stuff. (lmk if there is, even though i'll be mighty pissed, it'll still come in handy later) so... back to reinstalling games. and programs. and all this other crap.

at least i didn't lose my bookmarks this time...

Actually what you need to do is write a small tutorial on what you have done and submit it to Majic or myself and we will have King add it to the official HardFolding site.

As a team we are trying to get all this good info into one place and it looks like you have a good solution to add to the “how to” section.

hmm... that'd be kinda difficult for me to do... cause i don't have a machine that is folding and has windows and linux.

DaSmurf: could you write up what you did? make pictures or something? it'd be beneficial. i could probably make something up if need be, but... it'd probably be easier for you to do.

just make sure if you make pictures that they fit in the hardfolding.com layout, so you can be sure that people can read them properly.

I was going to, but upon further testing this is not a feasable situation.

I successfully got my work unit to switch over a few times, but now windows has no idea what linux did to this work unit, and the core crashes.
Reboot to linux, and it chuggs along fine...

So for now, its back to separate work queues for the different OSes...

Although you could always run the win32 client through wine. Maybe I'll do that and if it works well I could provide a tutorial on that.

Rogue Jedi, I'm truly in awe of you're linux, know how, hope to learn more from you're work, but you know how unreliable windows is. Where are the image files? After playing a bit with RAID0, I got tired of calling MS everytime I screwed up. 4 windows installs, 1 external HD, and 4 ASR floppies= Peace of mind.

We all hate installing windows.

What image files? Like pictures or like ISOs? If you need help with finding a Linux distro, I'd suggest RedHat's Fedora Core for ease of use. Post in the Linux forum if you need help getting it going, I read that fairly regularly and I'll help you out.

If it's pictures, I got nothing. ;)

XP Pro comes with a backup option, in acc.>system tools. Makes an exact copy of the entire drive, MBR is recreated when you put system disk back in. You can use ghost to get the same thing, or HDClone. Everything is restored exactly as you had it. You are supposed to be able to do the same thing with Live Linux disks.

I have Mandrake on one of my hard drives. It's still confusing, and I have the manuals. Basically it's too easy, to just reboot into windows, when you get frustrated. The windows install keeps getting QMD's, so I haven't messed with the Linux for awhile.
