Sharing network printer problem

I don't know quite how to explain all the steps I've tried so far because there are so many of them but basically I have tried every avenue with no luck. Ran network & printer troubleshooters which led nowhere.

This is a 2 computer home network through a router (wired) trying to share internet & printer. I can access internet on 2nd computer & can ping each so there is no problem w/ the network setup it just seems an issue actually printing. The printer shows up on both PC's as "ready" as do the shared files/drives, etc.

I get "error printing document" but no specific error message. I've tried changing the printer's ports, changing from "homegroup" to "workgroup", enabled sharing by share name on both, etc etc...

I'm running out of things to try. The printer has worked on both PC's so it's drivers on each should already be there. Maybe it needs its own IP (or MAC?) address? I used the network setup wizards on both so that did the set up automatically & assigned things presumably properly. Host computer is running W7 & the other dual boots WMe & XP.

Any ideas? thanks
 
How is the printer connected and to what is it connected to? USB to the router? USB to a computer? LPT to a computer? USB to a print server? RJ45 to a switch?

Printer is connected to PC1 via USB. Both PC's to router via ethernet.

It was initially DOT4_001 but I also tried LPT1 which didn't work either.
 
Printer make and model ? Does it have Ethernet on the back ?

If it does, then plug it into the network and configure it that way, usb sharing = yuk!
 
Unless I can get it recognized over the network it won't matter what type of connection I use.

If you buy a NETWORK printer you won't have these issues at all!

Most printers these days COME with network capability, ie wireless or Ethernet.
 
What he's trying to do should work perfectly fine.

Can the host PC print? That's step 1. If it can't, you need to solve that first. Make sure you're printing to the local port and not the network share on itself.

Is the print spooler service running on on both? Are you using a username and password that matches on both machines?
 
This printer is "network ready".

Yes. When printer is connected to either machine it works/prints properly.

I'm not sure about that. It showed DOT4_001 whatever that means. I set it to LPT1 to test & that didn't work either.

Print spooler seems to be running on both. I've got both not requiring logon at least until I sort this out. On Win7 I (as admin) I can see the other computer's drives & access them. On the XP (also as admin) I can see the W7 machine but if I try to "open"/access it to see it's drives, etc it asks me for a username & password - for which computer it's meaning idk. I've tried the UN/PW's for both but neither is "correct" so idk how to rectify that.
 
Both computers need to be in the same workgroup, which it sounds like you have already done. If you aren't sharing folders or printers yet there's nothing for you to see when you click the other computer in Network Neighborhood. On the XP computer, what happens when you right click the printer and go to it's properties to enable sharing?

I have them in same workgroup (I think!). I've tried them as "workgroup" and "homegroup" which is another rather confusing W7 scheme but neither worked.

When I right click it shows properties, etc set to be shared & listing the name of the printer. I've tried it with a location set \\computername\nameofprinter & without a location - neither way will print (in spite of printer shown on both machines w/ same name, as "ready" and shared.

No, that brings up (just like when I right click the other computer in My Network Places) a place to enter a username & password. Idk for which computer or what the hell the UN &/or PW's are since I've tried every possibility for each I know of. And in spite of neither computer requiring logon!? I even changed the PW on the W7 machine (I think that's the one it's after) then tried it to access it through the network on the XP machine & that wouldn't work. So, I'm confused!

If a folder is shared on the XP computer and a user robert on the XP computer has the right to view the folder, then on the Windows 7 computer you must enter robert's username and password to view the folder.

For now, access the security rights for the printer and grant access to everyone.

Since you've been going back and fourth a lot on this I think there may be an incorrect setting somewhere. Double check this too.

I had set all folders on both computers to be shared & from the W7 computer I can see & access the XP computer & folders. It's the reverse that's the problem. I've also tried to give/set security/access rights to all the users & accounts on both machines. I am Administrator on both however when I tried to follow the guide in your link it wouldn't let me name a new port say "I didn't have access rights. Contact your network administrator" (who would be me, no?!).

Again, from the XP machine I can see the W7 computer itself but not access it because it asks for a UN/PW which never works - I've tried every combination of UN & PW's I've ever used on either computer.
