So here's my current situation:

I'm on the East Coast of the US, my brother is in Taiwan. He would like me to send him a movie file on my computer. Rather than having to swap things out on my iDisk, I'd like to give him access to my entire movies folder so he can pick and choose at his leisure. We both have fast, reliable internet connections, so this shouldn't be a problem. What's going to be the best way to do this? I've never tried using FTP over different networks, so I'm not sure how to go about it. Alternately, can I route an arbitrary folder through my iDisk and let him access it that way? Finally, if I mark a folder as Shared in the 'Sharing' pane of preferences, how can I be assured he'll have access to anything from halfway around the world?

I've been fiddling with things all day, and I'd like to be able to do this as painlessly as possible without opening my entire computer up to whoever wants to take a look around, so I'd be appreciative of any help.
 
A 'reliable' and safe way to go about doing something of that sort would be SHH Tunneling, there are several ways of doing it on Mac OS. Essentially it would be setting up an 'encrypted' connection between your computer and your brothers through the internet. (you will obviously need to keep your on all the time). This may not be the fastest way to transfer files through the internet. But it is the safest.

what which 10.x flavor are you both on?

I can't remember what 10.4 looks like but you can enable all sorts of sharing and restrict it to just people who you create a login for.

in 10.5 it goes like this.

1) System Prefs > Sharing
2) Turn "file sharing" on by checking it.
3) Add folders you want to share (By default it's already poplulated with your "Public Folder")
4) The add the users you want, you can create new share users with their own name/pass so you're not giving out your user account details.
5) Then you select what privileges they get. (Read Only, Write Only, Read/Write)
6) you can choose either afp if you're both on a mac, or if in options change it smb for pc folk.
7) then others just access via afp://0.0.0.0 (zeros are your ip address, unless you've got a dyndns address setup already). And it just shows up on their end as a shared drive.

I've do this to dump music files i get at work for home machine :) It's secure as even if someone gets the user/pass it's only good for the shared folder, won't be able the see the rest of the machine and do damage.

oh almost forgot for mac uses to login to this remote machine they just hit Cmd+K in the finder and input the afp://..... or smb://... addresss
 
also in 10.5 a ssh connection can be turned on with the "Remote Login" option in the sharing pref.
 
It looks like this is going to work perfectly over afp. We both have MacBook Pros, so I just whipped up a shared account that doesn't have access to the rest of my files and emailed it over to him. Thanks for the help everyone :)
