Shallow rackmount cases

Anyone have experience with these? It seems reports with pictures are hard to come by. I have an almost square 4 post rack in the basement so full depth rackmount cases aren't an option. But before I lay down $100 on a case I'd like to see some examples of fit.

Anyone?

the only ones i have seen that i would actually call shallow were for ITX boards, besides that, they are all like 20 feet deep or something insane lol

servercase.com is usually a pretty good place to get an idea of whats out there

Rackable made a lot of half depth servers. You can find them on ebay and places like geeks.com sometimes. I can measure one later, but they are some like 14" deep. They also fit full EATX boards.

Mohonri, yep, those two are probably what I'm going with. However, detailed pics of loaded chassis are almost non-existent. I'd just like to see how it all might fit before I buy.

Thanks though!

The price is definitely right on those.

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I just came across an eBay listing with pictures of the 2u shallow case fully loaded. link.

It's a tight fit, but if you're not futzing with it very often, it'll work just fine.

Thanks for posting that. However, that's just the Norcotek one and you can get that from newegg for about the same price. I ended up getting a couple of he Norcos and Ilike them. I'll try to remember to post some pictures later.

Please do. Nothing like some good rackmount pr0n in the morning! :)

Thanks for reminding me! Here's the gallery: http://picasaweb.google.com/mdgeek/NorcoTekRPC450#

And here's one of the pics:

I too was looking for a shallow rackmount case. I considered that Norco, but I did not want to be constrained to using only low profile cards.

Long story short, I have my house all wired to a close in the basement. There's really not room for anything close to a full depth rack. I figure I've got about 14" of depth to play with.

So I ended up getting one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811117117

This chassis allows me to use the full height cards I have via a 1x3 flex riser card (not the one included) into a VIA Mini-ITX board. The intent is for this to be a untangle box. I just got the chassis Friday and have stripped it down totally and laid out my cuts and component locations. The front and back pieces on this are attached via screws. The front should be easy to re-attach after I chop it tomorrow. One last note...This chassis is all aluminum, so it should be easy cutting.

I was. I had a standard 2 post 19" rack and full depth cases put a little too much rearward pressure on it, even though it was bolted into the floor.

However, I just scored a full height 4 post cabinet with sides and doors...for free! It's probably 300lbs dry!

So, I'm still interested in the shallow depths because I might be able to put two cases back to back but I can also use full depth cases now without any problem. I just got an RPC-250 as well and I'll put up some picks of that soon.

My original desire was partly motivated by my experience with Cobalts and the nice tight form factor they came in. There are a number of servers I'd like to run that are pretty basic and don't require a lot of horsepower. Single HDD and a small PSU. You'd think there'd be some small and cheap cases for that but that doesn't seem to be true. With virtualization getting common and free there's also less need for such a thing now. You can do more VM's in a beefy 4U than you might be able to do with a low power 1U server.

It's all about trade-offs.
