SG07+GTX480: Cooling help

Well, there's two different aftermarket coolers that'll fit inside the SG07:

Gelid Icy Vision
Zalman VF3000F

Both circulate air over the heatsink, but don't exhaust the air. The top 180mm fan will cool the back of the card, but not the front where it needs cool air. There are vents all in front of the card, which will provide some cool air, but will I suffer horrible temps?

The GTX480 won't fit in SG07 unless I remove the 180mm fan (not happening) and I don't need that much noise.

Has anyone done this yet?
 
So you do not want to use a standard cooler? What I was going to do was install an evga high air flow bracket and cut a hole where the fan sits with a plastic cup thing (ones on desks that are for cable management) with a foam bottom so that it presses up against the videocard.

Was just an idea so all the air would come from outside then blow it out the case. You could also look into the CoolIT Omni ALC 470/480 http://www.guru3d.com/news/coolit-systems-omni-alc-gtx-470--480-cooler/
 
Where could I even mount that cooler in the case? It seems just too large.

Like I said, stock is just too loud. If that cooler puts the 480 close to 500, I could pick up a used 5970 for that cost, and it's a lot quieter.
 
If i do recall, the 480 with fit, its just a special order on how you install it because of those damn heat sinks off the top.
 
Yes, I noticed it does.

Problem is, even if the stock will fit, its too loud.

I was thinking the either cooler might work.

Seems smoother than the 5970 as it still suffers microstutter. If it didn't, i'd get it.

You sure about that? AFAIK both those coolers are 3 slots with their fans installed. The SG07 has maybe 2.5 slots worth of space... I think you'll be hard pressed to find a 2-slot cooler that will work. For a lesser card, the Scythe Musashi or Coolink GFXChilla might be decent options, but not for the GTX480.
 
The CoolIT would fit if you mount it in place of the 180mm top fan. It would not be ideal for cooling everything else as well but it's a fair trade off from the acustic standpoint given it's a 480.

There was a youtube video posted in one of my threads awhile back comparing sound levels with the high flow brackets from evga and it keeps it a bit quiter and you can always manually set the fan profile.

What I would do is buy a 460 or 5770 and hold off till 6870 for the 400 dollar purchase. It will surely be quiter and have lower temps.
 
After looking at ATI vs nVidia, I really have no interest in getting a 5970 or 6970 at this point since ati just doesn't seem to do a very good job in games vs nvidia.

That' said, I'm stuck w/ 470 vs 480. I can get a cool 470 from palit that'll be silent.

Blows my mind that cooler can't be put on the 480 and work as well.

Edit: Before jumping to confusions, when people say the cards won't fit, based up one what measurements are you going by?

How thick is the card w/ the Gelid or Zalman cooler on it? How much more space is there left in the case?

One slot width = ~20mm
Judging from pics, the SG07 has two slots + maybe another 1/2 slot (10mm) to the case side panel = ~50mm

Zalman VF3000 is 51mm thick

Gelid is 52mm

The video card PCB + surface mount components occupy a few mm of the slot width, maybe 4-6mm

So in total you're looking at maybe 55-60mm for the card plus cooler, which exceeds the available space by 5-10mm

That palit 470 looks good though
 
Thanks for the measurements.

I might just say F it and go for a 480 and make a custom fan profile.

The 470 seems good and would work if I wasn't doing 2560, but 1920 instead.
