Hey all,

First up, sorry - yet another SG05 thread - and a bunch of newbie questions, too. But hey, we all had to start somewhere, right?

I recently assembled a mini ITX setup, based on an Asrock Z77E in an SG05, after coming across this forum whilst looking for ideas for a portable gaming system (and seeing how many of you were raving about the case). I initially planned to use a Corsair H60 as my CPU cooler, but decided I couldn't do without the hard-drive I'd have to remove to fit it (case modding is a little out of my area of expertise).

So, at the moment, I'm stuck with the stock Intel cooler, and temperatures after a few hours of gaming are getting pretty close to 75C. I'm using an i3570k at stock speeds, and while I know Ivy Bridge gets hot and that's a way off the max, it seems a tad too high. Hence my first question: is this an acceptable temperature to reach on a daily basis? Would it have any sizeable effect on longevity?

If I do need to keep temperatures lower than that, what cooler would you recommend that would fit both the SG05 and the Z77E-ITX? I'm not using low-profile ram, either, so I fear my options may be limited. The Shuriken Rev. B seems to be a popular choice in such a situation, but reviews of it haven't praised its thermal performance. Any ideas?

Intel's datasheet says 105C is Tmax for the i5-3570k, so you've got warranty coverage until it gets there :p

In all honesty, that's a bit warmer than I'd be comfortable with; what do your mobo temperatures look like compared to ambient temperatures? That will tell you if it's a difficulty of getting the heat from the processor into the case air (i.e. you need to reseat the hsf, use less TIM, etc) or if the case air is much higher than ambient, you need to get higher throughput case fans. If the case air is hot (over 45C), I'd be much more concerned about what it's doing to your PSU... as far as components go, CPUs are pretty robust.
 
The labels don't seem to be too descriptive, but if i'm guessing right that's saying that ambient is around 27C and your system air temperature is around 43C (if that's correct, that's a pretty big jump). The intel cooler is pretty bargain basement in terms of performance, but if it's working with a 43C input stream of air then cooling the processor down to upper 70's at full tilt is actually not bad (for it).

Do you have any pictures of your system (to see wire management) and what fan are you running the front of the case?
 
I'm using the standard 120mm silverstone fan that came with the case (@1200RPM). I don't have a camera, I'm afraid - I've kept all the wiring to one side as best as I can, out of the way of the airflow from the case fan and the CPU - but with a case this size it would be difficult to re-arrange the wires any better, regardless.

Thanks for the replies. With the jump in temperatures between ambient and system air, would it be worth opting for a better case fan, or would that make little difference?
 
The Rev B will not work if you have any sort of heatspreader on the RAM (unless you want to cut the heatspreader, they are fairly ineffective anyway if you are not OCing the RAM). What sort of fan profile have you selected in BIOS for the CPU? Make sure its fairly aggressive. As long as the case fan is running full speed, I doubt swapping it out would help much, particularly with a stock cooler. Vacuum the front case intake once a month.
 
The front fan is set to full speed in the BIOS (and always has been, as far as I'm aware). So with that in mind; would the best option be to fit an aftermarket cooler? Does anyone have any suggestions? I appreciate there's a lot of limitations involved here.
 
I have geil evo sticks (newegg shell shocker) and pulled the heatsinks/spreaders right off with no ill effects.

I'd try a combo of a better aftermarket cooler and a better front fan (scythe ap-15?)
 
Thanks again for your help, Machupo. AP-15s are a little difficult to find over here, but the Noctua NF-P12 seems to have very positive reviews - would that do the trick? I can't imagine there's that much difference! I take it I want it pulling air into the case, rather than pushing it out?

As far as CPU coolers go I admit I'm stumped. I know it can't be taller than 82mm to fit in the case; finding one that small, which also fits the Z77E whilst giving decent performance, seems to be pretty difficult.
 
Having looked around - the Samuel 17 seems to be an option. Can anyone confirm whether or not it'll fit in the case, and lower temps enough?

EDIT: Well, after more research, I went ahead and bought the Samuel, a couple of Apache fans and some decent thermal paste. Hopefully that will fix the problem. Thanks for the help.

Well, installed today and maximum temp reached under prime95, running for 20 minutes, was 62C. I'd call that a success.
 
I ordered the asus z77 itx and the 3570K like yours

i have not picked my case but its either the one you picked or sg05 or prodigy until i find something else :)


can you run some different overclocks?

i just would like to see what your temps are doing?

have you got a good gaming video card in there or are you just running onboard?

i really would like to see what these cases do with z77 itx and I5/I7 3rd gen and 2nd gen too
