I know it's possible to do this (see http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=193965) but in every example I've seen, the slim optical drive must be removed. There will most likely not be a way to mount any 3.5 drives without some serious modding, but I can accept that.

I'm thinking about rotating the H70 radiator 90 degrees so that the parts that stick out are now sideways. Will they stick out too much and interfere with the graphics card (or even stick out of the case?)

I actually did this with an H60.

Unless you're doing serious overclocking, you can get a 120mm Scythe:

I got the 2000 RPM one and its not too loud if you turn on voltage fan speed control in the bios. You won't be able to mount the 3.5 very easily though I think you can. I ended up zip tying it against the right side where it perfectly wedged between the radiator tubes and the side of the case ( I faced them right to make room for my video card ).

I think the cannonical method for mounting in a SG05 is zip tying the fan to the back of the thing.

*EDIT* - Oops, I read H50. What do you need an H70 in an ITX for anyway? That's a crazy amount of heat dissipation for a small system. You may just want to invest in a H60 or a SG07 instead. :| You can probably mount it like that but you'll need a shorter GFX card and that'll limit your options. Make sure the tubes are facing right (if you're looking at the front).

h70 is really to thick to be in there , a h60 or h50 is more ideal

In my case im using sg05, h70 and amds 6870. Its impossible for me to rotate the h70 90 degrees as you say just because it interferes with the gpu. Theres a method im about to try for being able, at least, of using the optical drive. That means you leave the rad and fan unscreweatthe bottom of the case and do new holes to screw the fan/rad to the case, so it stays as low as pissible. This way you can almost place the odd with no problem.

About hdds. 2,5" can be placed to the left of the psu and the left steel profile. (take a look at my pictures at te sg05 post)
3,5" can be placed as AntiSocialMunky said.
 
There is a Thread in here called "little black box" or something. Dude is using a Coolit unit turned sideways, maybe a 460 or another 7" card and has a slim OOD.
Im using an H50, 6870 and ODDs are over rated. I just plug in a drive once in a blue moon i need to reinstall windows.
 
Right, it's a bit complicated. Best if I take each separately. You have the Corsair H5O, H6O, and the Antec Kuhler H2O-620 as all-in-one watercooling solutions that have a 1" thick radiator. You then have the Corsair H7O, H8O, and the Antec Kuhler H2O-920 as the solutions with the 2" thick radiator. All the pump/CPU blocks should clear the 300/450W PSU fine, and don't seem to interfere with board components in my experience.

All the radiators can be mounted in three different ways.

a) With the rad mounted horizontally in the front of the case. This will allow you to mount an optical drive in the front (you will need to dremel off the HDD bracket) but it will stray into the space for the graphics card, and you will lose the equivalent length of the rad - as you can get away with a total of 10.25" in the SG05, mounting a rad this way will leave you with either 9.25" or 8.25" depending on your choice.

b) Mount the rad vertically. This doesn't interfere with the graphics card choice (you get the full 10.25") but you won't be able to fit an optical drive - the bracket that holds it will NOT fit in the case with this method.

c) Drill holes yourself to mount the rad slightly off-centre. This allows you to get away with both an optical drive and the full 10.25" of graphics card, but it means you will have to drill your lovely new case.
 
Thanks for all the replies! I think I will pick one of these SG05-450's up. It's a damn good deal for just over 100 smackers including that spiffy little psu. When I can get my hands on the Zotac Z68 mini ITX board and a 2600K (you begin to see why I want as much cooling as I can get) I think I'll have a winner.

The SG07 has some things going for it, but I find it to be too pricey but more importantly the external design just doesn't cut it for me. It just looks boring to me. No visual appeal there. The flat black of the SG05 is much more tolerable. Also I can't get as good cooling in the SG07: where am I gonna find space to mount a radiator in there? Do 180mm square radiators even exist? I am looking at top end air cooling or H70 or better.

An SG05 with a 2 inch thick 120mm radiator would achieve lower temps than any machine you can build in a SG07, I think. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

I also looked at a lot of Lian Li options. I love the style of most of their creations, and the brushed aluminum is to die for. But none of them have a layout that enables space/performance optimization on quite the same level as the SG05: No ITX sized Lian-Li's have reasonable 2x120mm radiator mount locations, and to mount 120mm radiators on a PC-Q08 is awkward either way you do it (front 140 creates a ton of wasted space and nowhere to put hard disks, and top 120 leaves zero space between a 1 inch rad + 25mm fan and the PSU)

Q11 has got no space for radiators of any kind, and is air cooled only. I'd like to place some emphasis on CPU OC performance...

Q25 may be promising but from what I can tell has same issues as Q08. Plus it's not available yet.

I could move up to microATX cases as long as theyre small and Lian Li has the V350 series and I have seen some terrific looking water setups in that, but it's a really tight fit to get a 2x120 rad up in the front and lots more work is necessary to go beyond that. Not to mention the rad at the front also impinges on video card space.

And one more option is Lan Gear's Da Box which is damn expensive. But it allows for fitting a massive air cooler. SG05 is definitely smaller though.

So at the end of the day I think SG05 is the ticket. It's got more ventilation than any of the Lian Li's, has magical room just enough to fit a massive 120mm radiator, a power supply that is just the right size, not more powerful than necessary, and definitely not bigger than necessary (as full ATX PSU's are in a SFF build) and puts nearly every square inch of its space to good use. I also love the ample ventilation for the GPU. It really is as good as it could possibly be, and I am looking for no less than that. :D

There's a recent thread here about the CoolIT Epic 180, though I kind of doubt it would fit in the SG07 since rads are a bit larger than the fan footprint and the space seems pretty tight.

I wouldn't say that... video card length is a limiting factor with that case though.

I think this might be the right idea. The area over the PSU on the case is a sort of perforated "mesh". I don't think it'd be any problem to take some tin snips or a dremel, cut out a passthrough, and mount the rad on the OUTSIDE of the case, blowing air up through the rad.

'Course, you'd have that big bulky rad on top of your case makin' it look like your case has got a wicked tumor, but then you wouldn't have to worry about the internals much at all.
 
Munky, I was toying with that idea when I was thinking about the v35x's. Modding a PSU (so the fan isn't PSU temp-controlled) and mounting a rad to it could work if there is space.

I've ordered an SG05 so I don't really think there'll be room for it in there, but i think this idea should be investigated if I ever get around to an SFF build that has room for an ATX PSU (and a little space under it).

Can you mount it diagonally? You don't have to stick it up against the front vent. Shove it into the front right corner and see if you can fit your ridiculous video card.

I'm gonna have to get myself an ITX board and a radiator to investigate the cooling setup. I like the prospect of being able to drill some holes to move the rad down a little to make room for both the drive and the video card, however I'm a bit skeptical of it since the rad sticks out about a half inch at the bottom and there doesn't seem to be more than a half inch between the bottom of the fan and the bottom of the case, just eyeballing the case from pictures... Since I'd need to shift it down a further half inch or so in order to make room for that drive, I don't know if it will actually work.

I should have the case today though, and all I really need is a ruler to see if its possible.
 
I never tried a 3.5 but I'm nearly positive it would fit on the floor of the case using double sided tape or the likes.
 
Won't, there is a standoff there for a OEM only card reader you'd need to dremel that out
 
Yeah I noticed that.. but can remove it pretty flush to the bottom of the case in about 10 seconds withe a dremel.

Always wondered what that standoff was for though, thanks!
 
Got the case, it's real nice, the 450W version comes with the perfect PSU (no SFX psu that's much better than their 450 far as I know) and the black paint job on the inside is perfect too. Sweet deal.

So there's about 155mm of clearance from the bottom of the case to the bottom of the slim drive. The H70 being 152mm tall gives about 3mm to fit the drive mount bracket. The drive bracket must be modified to fit any radiator since the 2.5" bay will be in the way. Cutting that down to give up to 65mm will still allow the 2.5" to be mountable, and that works out quite well since the thickness of the 38mm rad and a 25mm fan is 63mm. Very very tight but it's nearly perfect, not a cubic inch is wasted in this case. I could even do this mod with a hacksaw so I may not even need to get a dremel, though I'm a little worried about one of the rivets. Only way to get them out (easily) is with a drill or dremel, yes?

I took a look at the Kuhler 920 and was surprised to find that its radiator is 45mm thick which is a whole 7 more millimeters than the H70/H80. There might be space available there for it, but I think a H70 and 25mm fan is already really close to the motherboard...

The standoff explains the presence of that rectangular hole found on the bottom of the front chassis and also why that section of the front panel is removable! I really like how this case makes it possible to choose among several options: 1) mount rad horizontally to enable a 3.5" drive by removing the standoff but blocking one or two inches of video card, 2) swap the 3.5" drive for a card reader, 3) mount rad vertically to free up space for video card; will not allow 3.5" space but MAY be able to squeeze the card reader in; no space for slim ODD, 4) mount rad vertically, shifted down, definitely no space for anything on the bottom but opens up ODD and video card space

I'd like to build an all-out HTPC feature packed machine so the card reader is really interesting for me. If I can find a speedy enough 8.25 inch card (hmm that might be a tall order) I'll be able to stick in an H70, blu-ray slim burner, solid state disk, 2.5" laptop hard drive, and card reader up in there, which really is quite a feat.

I couldn't find much info on the card reader but according to a post on the SG05 thread on this forum here I may be able to get a slim card reader to mount there nicely, but I may end up needing to make the front panel cutout for it myself, which isn't so nice. Anyone know anything about this? Specifically, if there is a part that can be ordered which is a replacement for the bottom of the front panel with a cutout for the slim card reader?

Alternatively a 3.5" drive going in there would also make good use of that space though it would be far from serviceable and would not receive much airflow. Maybe put a 3TB 5400RPM disk there. Not sure if there's even going to be space left to stick left over PSU cable, but that's not something a little modding won't fix...

I think it's time to order some more parts. When is that Zotac Z68 going to be available??

Since I am getting impatient waiting for that Zotac Z68 wifi to become available I am going to build a test system with this asrock mobo and the insanely short Palit 560Ti along with an H80 cooler and probably an i5 2500 non-K. The cooling is obviously overkill but I need it to test the fit, it will not be overkill when I set this up afterwards with a Z68 and a i7 2600K.

This ought to allow me to mount the radiator horizontally, and there will still be space for everything!!

Anybody got SSD recommendations?

Well I decided on an OCZ Vertex 3 120GB so this tiny i5 system will be ready to rock by tomorrow afternoon hopefully, if both newegg and amazon come through for me with one-day shipping. :D Then hopefully I can have some pictures

Surprised to find out the mobo i ordered comes with a remote control. Very cool!
 
Yeah but a H70 is basically 2 H50s taped together.

I have the H50 in an sg05 with a push pull fan config (2 scythe ss 110cfm) and theres room to spare so an h70 with 1 fan should fit.

I think a better solution would be an ssd + a 2.5" mech hdd for storage.
 
Turns out mountiing the radiator directly to the case in horizontal orientation prevents the front panel from fitting, as the little PCB for the LEDs and button switches sticks through into the case.

Since I didn't want to sacrifice the optical drive (which I may do in later builds because slim slot load optical drives are damned expensive: $60 to get a dvd burner model and over $150 for a blu ray) what I did was mount the H80 in push-pull. The 7.4 inch video card gives about 3mm of clearance from the radiator.

However this means that even the 2.5" bay underneath the drive tray will not fit. I tried bending it down diagonally in the space behind the fan but the H80's liquid tubes and some power cables interfere quite a bit.

I wanted to avoid having to completely take the machine apart in order to dremel out the standoff at the bottom to make room to stick the 2.5" drive down there. A 3.5" does NOT fit on the floor, the mobo is just a tad too long, and a 3.5" drive is also too thick to fit there.

My plan is to use industrial velcro and attach the SSD to the side of the radiator. I will drill two holes at the back of the case and mount a 3.5" HDD, inside the 3.5" bay that came with the case, to the back of the case via two mounting screws on its side. Its other side rests upon the H80 itself (it lies parallel to the mobo and leaves about a centimeter of space for the PSU's 80mm fan to grab air).

If I had thermally conductive tape to attach the SSD to the radiator it would be best for cooling the SSD though I don't think it will be much of an issue. I noticed it got a little warm while running, I have it just lying around on top of the case now since it's not mounted. Do these things fry themselves in confined spaces or can they dissipate well enough in slightly moving air?

The machine is running now, but I am waiting on the dvd drive I ordered and have not installed drivers. Windows cannot connect to the internet even with ethernet plugged in. This is what happens with really new hardware and chipset, I guess.

The good:

H80 on low is SILENT
Palit 560Ti is SILENT
Able to fit all components in case
Able to get H80 in push+pull config (push only allows 2.5" tray with modding, push+pull means gotta put 2.5" elsewhere)

The bad:

cannot mount radiator in pull only config - interferes with front panel
heavy modding of steel case components required to fit a radiator
very little space (what did I expect, though?)
No upgrade capability save possibly adding another 2.5 disk. Video card must be 7.5" or shorter

To work around that last con I will build these machines to be as future proof as possible today, and that's quite future proof: 3TB disk holds quite a bit of media, 120GB is plenty for an OS drive. The SSD is blazing fast: Windows boot takes 10 seconds! The Palit 560Ti is wonderfully equiipped for my purpose. Provides plenty of gaming horsepower for years to come, not very power hungry, and most importantly fits like a glove in this enclosure.

I am just blown away by the quietness of the build. It is far and away quieter than any machine I have ever encountered. It would be possible without the H80 by perhaps running a fan on 5V, but it's great to have an option not requiring modifications. I just hope the speed setting will permanently stick to low because that button is really really hard to access with the hard disk there and everything.
 
I'm contemplating using a bunch of tape to make a "pocket" that will allow me to drill holes in the case while the components are inside, because I don't want to take them all out again. I could make a pocket or box shaped thing out of duct tape, with sticky side toward the area I'm going to cut, that way debris lands upon the sticky side and sticks. I will put masking tape on teh case and attach teh duct tape pocket to the masking tape. then when I finish I can just remove the masking tape and it all comes off.

Is this a really bad idea, or just a bad idea? Anybody try something like this before?
 
I took it apart again. I had to drill two holes for HDD mounting and I also went and killed the standoff in the front, a couple of 2.5" drives can fit down there now.

You can see my new dremel and cutting disk in the background. I'm in love with this tool, case modding is a shower of sparks and ultimate detailed control. And what a tool! My dad has a roto-zip and the dremel wipes the floor with it. It is also less loud, and I'm not afraid to turn it on each time.

I just finished putting the rest back together. I should have taken a picture of how I mounted the HDD but it's actually kind of at an ugly angle that I'm not really happy with. I'll snap one on my next build...

What's macgyver about it? I've worked out all the kinks and the only modifications are making two cuts, drill two holes. And it fits all of this sweetness inside...
 
I hate to be a thread necromancer, but I wonder if the OP has any images of the finished system to share! I'm looking for ideas on how to complete a similar build, and would benefit from any advice.

I have a little mATX box I love dearly, but I decided to make a pair of ITX boxes this week (one is a christmas gift).

These parts are common across both systems:
Chassis: Silverstone Sugo SG05BB-450 (only chassis I could find with room for proper 2-slot GPUs)
PSU: Silverstone ST45SF 450W SFX12V (included with chassis)
Motherboard: ASRock Z68M-ITX (few choices, looks solid)
RAM: G.Skill Sniper 2x4GB DDR3-1333 (inexpensive)
GPU: XFX HD-687A-ZHFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB (non-ref, fits with room to spare)

These parts are in my personal build:
CPU: Intel Core i7-2700K ( :D )
HSF: Corsair Hydro H80 (I'm wondering if this was a bad call; H60 might fit better, but I wanted to OC harder~)
HDD: Undecided, either a WD6000HLHX or a Momentus XT 500GB
SSD: Crucial M4 64GB (for Intel SRT)
Monitor: ASUS ML248H (I love this series, they break so many traditions)

These parts are for the gift:

At the moment, I've assembled my system minus the CPU, HSF, and SSD. I'll probably need to cut the chassis a bit to make room for the radiator, but I see no way around it. Still trying to decide on a small-footprint (10keyless?) keyboard to include with the gift.

Anyone see any concerns? I'll post photos when I have the systems in better order. I'm also redoing the overclock on my main system after a BIOS flash; I lost a WD6000HLHX last week, so I was going to have some work to do on the box, decided I would get it all done at once.

I have an H60 but not the parts-kit for 1155. I got it used. I could buy a new one if necessary. I already bought an H80 but I could stuff that into something else, or return it.

I'm also really stuck on which HDD to put in my box. I'm staring at a WD6000HLHX, my favorite HDD, for $275, overnightable. I just don't know if I can make it fit in that 3.5" housing it includes. If I remove it, the warranty on it will be void, and I really love WD's warranty service. I just don't see a way to stuff a 3.5" drive in there. I could get one of the new Seagate Momentus XT 750GB drives, but that would mostly eliminate the benefit of having the Crucial M4 I already bought.

EDIT: after measuring a bit, and using a different 3.5" drive as a stand-in, I've determined that I can't possibly fit a WD6000HLHX unless I get a model without the heatsink. I can't find the option to buy the drive that way (only the 300GB model), and I'm sure it would be priced for "enterprise customers", so I went with the new 750GB Momentus XT, for $240. Seems like a good deal. Of course, the SSD will be somewhat of a waste, but I'm going to toss it in and bench it anyway :)

I also looked into overclocking using this board. It seems that ASRock opted for a sub-standard chipset cooling solution, and didn't apply any cooling whatsoever to the power VRM MOSFETs (the tiny IC packages near the CPU, near those grey ferrite chokes). I ordered up some enzotech heatsinks, one for the chipset, and 10 smaller ones for the VRMs. Hopefully I'll be able to make them all fit. I'd like to see my setup bit 4.5 GHz stable, but that's probably a pipe dream. I'll be disappointed if I can't hit at least 4.2 GHz, which is my personal best CPU OC frequency.

The story so far:
Girlfriend hates moving her main rig to attend LAN parties, so I thought she'd like having a tiny little ITX box to bring instead, and / or to replace her failing laptop. I decided I would buy her all the parts for one, and help her put it together (rather than doing it for it), by using a similar build as a template. She loved the idea, so I picked out the above parts and set to work on assembling mine as soon as they arrived.

Last weekend, we hit Microcenter and grabbed CPUs. I had her pick her own, and she went for the i5-2500K for the excellent price-performance ratio. I opted for the i7-2600K because I'm used to hyperthreading :mad: I think she made the better call.

I started benching my test-fit build while she was wrapping up her assembly (she finally understands what I mean when I say a new motherboard's connectors are "virgin"). Wasn't pleased with the mating of a few parts, nor with the performance of the RAM, but otherwise I'm pretty happy.

I spent the next few days custom-fabricating parts to mount my equipment a bit better: I replaced the ODD-mounting top-plate with a much simpler plate which I drilled to mount on all 4 top screws. This made room for the H60, with 2 AP-15s in push-pull. To that plate, I screw both of my 2.5" drives, upside-down. I mounted them on neoprene washers to leave more room for their cables to avoid touching the outer cover.

I inverted the PSU, so it intakes through the mesh portion of the top of the outer panel. This simplified cabling the inside, and when I showed it to her, she ended up doing the same on hers. Now I'm thinking about putting a dust-filter over its intake fan just to be safe.

I measured my northbridge HS temp and MOSFET temps; this board really requires better cooling out of the box. I highly recommend that everyone who own the ASRock Z68M-ITX/HT seriously consider replacing the northbridge heatsink with a much bigger passive cooler (like my Enzotech CNB-SI), or virtually any active cooler. Also, the MOSFETs are painfully hot to the touch uncooled, and even with heatsinks on them, they sit above 50C while in the UEFI menu, even at stock clocks and voltages. Please apply some cooling here if you care about the board at all.

I unmounted and remounted the H60 about 6 times total, each time trying a slightly different approach. On the backplate, I ended up placing a single #6 stainless steel washer on each threaded post below the plastic washer, such that the plastic ones still contact the board. This makes the backplate mate better to the board, which increases the pressure between the CPU and the waterblock, for decreased temps.

Current clocks:
CPU: 3.4GHz (stock) @ stock-v (wanted to tap down my RAM first)
RAM: 1333-9-9-9-24 (stock) @ stock (I couldn't stabilize fully at 1600-9-9-9-24 even at 1.65V, but got very close. May need to replace the stuff.)
GPU: 950Mhz (+50) core, 1050 (+25) vRAM @ stock (easy to OC, the stock heatsink on these cards seems much better than the reference cooler.)

I've ordered the Silverstone dust filter which seems to fit the ST45SF, it should arrive soon, I'll let you know how it goes. I think then I'll have to bend 80mm of the PSU bracket. Did you test temps with the PSU down and up?

I haven't tested temps in both configurations. I admit this is because I'm a little lazy: I found a very nice way to route the PSU cables while the PSU intakes from above. It may not be possible for me to run the PSU in the original orientation because of my HDD placement on the custom top plate I made. I should take photos, hmm.

Yeah, putting beefy components into a tiny system is awesome. My lady and I brought the two systems to Christmas Eve, since they were a present. We're both playing around with them right now.

Those Scythe Mini Kaze Ultras arrived. Their aspect ratio makes them look silly, but I love it. I haven't managed to mount them in the SG05 yet.

I just found out about the Scythe Kozuti (xoxide sells them pretty cheap), and I'm thinking about suggesting it to my girlfriend for her SG05. Has anyone tried it on this board? Does it block the PCI-e slot? Is there an easy way to mount an extra 100mm fan on top, e.g. clips of some kind?

She's running her i5-2500K completely stock right now, and doesn't want to remove the stock HDD bays in her SG05 (which I can kinda understand, honestly). I've been checking various heatsink options just to be sure, but it can be hard to tell. I know that the Scythe Shuriken Rev.B fits height-wise but blocks the PCI-e slot, as does the Scythe Big Shuriken. There are a few other options I've considered, like the Coolermaster GeminII S

These questions aren't exactly relevant to this specific build, as no H60 / H70 / H80 is involved, but otherwise the build is the same. I'm looking for ideas on how to fit the best low-profile HSF I can on this board, and in the same chassis. I'm hoping that using an air cooler that blows down on the board will improve airflow across the VRMs and make it even better at overclocking.

I've sold my original SG05 H80 system to a buddy of mine, it had an i5 2500 (no K) and H67 board in it, he's been happy with it.

Here are pictures I did take of that system:

You can see in the second picture what I did to mount a 3.5" drive. It basically screws to the back of the case above the mobo, I drilled two holes. The other side of it rests on top of the CPU block/pump.

Over the past few days I've been building a 2500K system with the Z68 board in a SG06. I like the aluminum front panel without the big plastic grille, but I'm starting to despise the USB ports which only ever allow one thing to be plugged in at once. Currently it is running more or less stable at 4.5Ghz, I can probably push it a bit to handle 4.7, but it'd get awful close to 1.4V vcore which I want to stay away from.. at 4.5 it seems to handle prime95 for short periods okay without throttling with my current temporary cooling solution. I am thinking about trying the enzotech copper mosfet sinks, and rigging something up to put a 40mm fan or two there, but I'm really wanting a more substantial heatsink. It'd have to be custom made.

One quite notable innovation I came up with this time around is a way to mount the H80 to allow for a full length (10 inch, 10.5 inch may be possible with a bit more case-cutting) video card, AND the slim disc drive.
