sg03, quad, and overclocking

Looking at buying a system around January. Been doing alot of reading of these forums and still feel like I don't have a definitive answer.

Thee idea as it stands is to get a
sg03
quad 6600 g0
nt06 lite
one of the p5kvm or ga-2sr motherboards
corsair power supply modded to add a yate loon 120mm 46cfm fan.
8800 gts
7200 rpm hd
sound card
two 120mm yate loons 46cfm running full power in the front.
Maybe a 120mmx20mm (if it will fit) under the nt06.

Does anyone have a similar system? What kind of temperatures are you getting with it at standard speeds? Overclocked?

Ideally I would like to hit 3.0 on the quad6600 and still have the system be stable and fairly quiet. Is this possible in this case or should I just go with a E.6850?

Hi there! After reading these forums for the last few months, I have finally taken the plunge and signed up.

Anyhow, I have just put together a build quite similar to the one you propose. I am still tweaking it, so no reports until I'm satisfied. However...

I have a Core 2 Q6600 (SLACR G0) processor; a P5K-VM motherboard; an NT-06 Lite heatsink; an Arctic Cooling 120mm PWM fan underneath it blowing up (a word of warning, it takes a lot of effort to do this right and I'm not sure that I did) and a Corsair VX450 exhausting heat on the other side.

Stock speeds at "stock" voltages with fans at full speed: getting around 55°C for cores 0 and 1 and 51°C for cores 2 and 3. Ambient is around 22°C. Note that the stock voltages are too high.

Stock speeds at Vcore = 1.15V with fans at full speed: getting around 51°C for cores 0 and 1 and 47°C for cores 2 and 3. Ambient is around 22°C.

Overclocked to 3GHz (333 * 9) at Vcore = 1.375V with fans at full speed: getting around 62°C for cores 0 and 1 and 58°C for cores 2 and 3. Ambient is around 22°C. I'm still tweaking this configuration.

And some more general advice: Those two front Yate Loon fans will be loud, if they're the same 28dBA fans I saw. I have a two similar-spec Scythe fans in the same position and they're loud unless I undervolt to about 7V.

I wouldn't spend my only PCI slot on a sound card; onboard is probably fine. Unless you have nothing else to use the PCI slot on.

Will have a more comprehensive post when I'm done tweaking.

Something better than the P5K-VM could come out by January. A better case than the SG03 could come out as well. Or at least a better option in housing, cooling, and OCing a Q6600.

Hell yeh. So it's wise to keep an eye open for better solutions. As I'll show, the SG-03/NT-06 combo isn't really up to the task of cooling an overclocked Q6600.

Of course, if you wait for the "next best thing", you will be waiting forever...

P.S. The temperatures in my original post are all full-load under Prime95. For idle temps, subtract about 10 degrees; they also throttle back to a 6x multiplier due to SpeedStep (full-speed is 9x).

I was looking at the 20dcb scythe s-flex's to be specific, but judging by your temps with 28 dcb's they won't be enough.

I'm constantly on the lookout for new cases but so far it looks like the
tj-08 with a xp-120 extreme cooler is going to be the ticket. Which is unfortunate because
it's nowhere near as pretty as the sg03. I also wish it had a case cover for the power button to stop inquisitive 2 year olds.

I haven't tested this enough. But current evidence suggests that the two front 120mm fans don't have a huge effect. I don't see a massive difference between running them on silent at 7V and full-blast at 12V.

The heatsink is the main factor. You'll want a full-size one for higher overclocks. The TJ-08 can apparently accommodate these. But as you mentioned, it is a trade-off.

Well, the reason why I said what I did because we know new mobos are coming out between now and January so its a really good chance ASUS and Gigabyte will have some new OCing mATX mobos. Better than what we have now? Unknown. Also that new NZXT case might make for a better Q6600 cooling case than the SG03 but until we see some performance reviews we wont know for sure. Its due out November I think. I'd have to recheck on that to make sure.

Looking at buying a system around January.

Then wait until January to plan your build. There's no point in planning a build 2 months early. What's hot now is going to be outdated in 2 months.

And if everything I've been reading is true, you'd want to go with an 8800GT instead of an 8800GTS. It's going to be cheaper/same price, perform better, and use 1 slot instead of 2, which is crucial in an mATX setup. 8800GT comes out sometime in late October or early November. See why you shouldn't bother planning your build so far ahead of time?

I like to plan 3 to 4 months ahead, and I actually enjoy it so will continue to do so.
I find that my systems come out alot better if I spend some time researching them.
I am aware of the GT which looks promising and the new nzxt case is interesting but not too keen on its looks because I'm more into mini-towers then airconditioners and fridges mainly because I want it to sit on top of my current atx midtower system.
I've now found a case which is basically the same interior as the TJ08 but with better looks. Coolermaster Elite 340 looks like a winner for what I want and the power button is less then blindingly obvious for my two year old to poke at which is great. Looks like you can remove the drive cage and shove two 120's in the front instead of just one.
