SFTP Transfer performance... (Mac)

Trying to figure out how to get fast downloading going over SFTP, the server I'm downloading from has very high bandwidth speeds, my home connection is 30mbps, but my speeds are pretty slow depending on what client I use.

Ex. FileZilla gets 300-800kbps, fluctuating very quickly.. Transmit gets 180kbps...

What client has a very high number of concurrent threads? I'm assuming that's what I would need to use to get the highest transfer rate..

Or, should I be using HTTP with a download manager?
 
Upload seems reasonable, though not ideal; what's more interesting is the fluctuations in the download rate.

Just to rule out a few options:
- What details can you provide about the host SFTP server? (You should specify at least the SFTP server software.)
- What bandwidth does "speedtest.net" report?
- On your local network, is the machine running Filezilla connecting over wireless or wired?
- From Filezilla's "Site Manager", what are you using in the transfer settings tab?
- How many concurrent downloads are you using? What happens when you set it to download serially (ie: one at a time)?

In general, my first step would be to temporarily connect the computer directly to your DSL/Cable modem (with a wire), and test for any different results. Your answers above would also help.
