For many years I've always ordered mini or mid tower systems for the company I work for. I came across a few Dell SFF's and considering changing to desktop SFF in the future for users. My concern is longevity and reliability due to heat concerns. Would appreciate any input from admins using SFF in the office.
 
BITD when I worked for a larger corporation, we used Dell Optiplex SFF boxes for most desktops. They worked fine and were easy to service. For a brief while they did have reliability issues, but those were due to a bad batch of boards and bad batch of HDDs. Except for those two problems, the systems worked like any other system. A bad run of parts isn't limited just to SFF. It just happens that one model number of Optiplex was affected out of several that we had, all of which were SFF. Now, some of these did get pretty hot, but we're talking about dual core Pentium D. The later Core 2 Duo models barely got warm.

If you have heat concerns, make sure you get Sandy Bridge CPUs in them. They draw so little power under normal use that they barely make any heat at all.
 
We have a lot of HP 6000SFF machines out in our plant. On the hottest summer day where a PC would be, it probably doesn't get above 110-115F though.

Most are Pentium E6300s though.

What's nice about the 6000 Pro SFF though is there is a second 3.5" bay so you can throw in a PCI SATA Raid card and have a nice SFF with Raid 1, but I guess the 6000 Pro is on the bigger side of the SFF cases.
 
Yeah I had a small batch of Dell mid towers with bad power supplies once so I understand that. Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm gonna make the switch. They'll be easier to access for everyone and won't be sitting on the floors sucking up all the dust.
