Every summer I got to the CPL gaming event held in Dallas and sometimes I go to the winter event as well. I have been bringing my laptop since they have a BYOC but its getting old and can't handle newer games such as BF2.

So I think this year I am going to build a SFF to bring along. I don't want to spend that much money so what I thought I would do is buy a mATX case and motherboard and just put the parts I currently have from my desktop into it. The Ultra Black MicroFly looked nice and is $50 on tigerdirect. I haven't decided on a motherboard yet but it needs to be socket 939 since I have an Amd x2 3800+ (w/ stock cooling). From what I have heard my 7900gtx sc will fit just fine in this case as well as my 500 watt x-connect psu.
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on motherboards and any comments at all. Thanks
 
Yes all those parts will fit. As for a mobo ide buy either:

evga sli
foxconn 6150
or biostar tforce6100
 
So the 6150 Foxconn board is suppose to be pretty good as well as having some nice OC options, eh?
 
I saw that evga sli board but that is not really needed since I don't run sli and most of the time bumps the price up. I'll check out the others though.
I was browsing through tigerdirect and saw a mATX msi mobo for $50 as well. link
Only thing that sorta bugs me is the onboard video and the 10/100 lan which I would like to be gigabit.

If you're looking for onboard gigabit, get the foxconn. It depends how much you're looking to overclock your setup as well, but the Foxconn will allow for that as well; It does pretty well actually.
 
I don't plan on overclocking and I haven't heard many great things about the foxconn brand.

And yet you think the SiS mobo would be better? You do realise that Foxconn is the OEM for a lot of other companies, right? :rolleyes:
 
The biostar and the foxconn are the 2 of the best in the MATX category.

Other good choices are the DFI RS482 and the MSI K8NGM2-FID

The NBP MSI board is a firewire-less version of the FID

The FID is a great board if you aren't going for high overclocks. If you are look at the Biostar or the Foxconn.
 
As a gamer, there's nothing compelling about the NBP version, I have DDR 400 OCZ that runs at 333 no mater what I try, the option to increase the ram speed to stock clock simply isn't there in the BIOS. The integrated video (I know you'll be using a card but bear with me) isn't a standard 6150 so the regular forceware drivers you would download won't work (nVidia business platform only). Foxconn is an OEM supplier for Apple I believe, and the FID version of MSI's board should be fine if you're not looking to change the vCore ;).
 
Hmm so even when I disable the onboard video I still need a different forceware driver or did I misinterprate that?
 
Plain and simple you need different drivers for the nVidia business platform boards regardless, the standard 6150 mobo drivers won't work.

Like Solar said they're not really that compelling since they're aimed at the business market more then anything else.
 
I'm confused now. You said I won't go with it but then the FID would be a better choice. Sorry just trying to clarify.
 
Now does that foxconn use those special business platform drivers as well since it's the same chipset as the other boards?
 
The foxconn uses standard motherboard and graphic drivers. I have used 3 in various machines and really like it. Swapped from a Biostar to this in my own rig and Asus A8N-VM to foxconn in a families machine.

It's a standard 6150 mobo.
 
Is there any quick way to tell if the board will only take business platform drivers or regular nforce chipset drivers? So on the FIB board if you try and install regular nforce chipset drivers it just wont let you install them and where would you download those, another section on the site or something? And do these really have an impact on gaming?

Yeah, they have a "business platform approved" seal (or something like that on them.
 
Well I know I am going to order the microfly but I am really having a hard time deciding what motherboard still. I would like to stick with msi since that is the motherboard I have right now but after hearing about this business platform stuff I don't know if that would be the best choice since it's going to be a gaming PC.

Why? The NBP is the one aimed at businesses while the FID is a regular 6150 mobo, we've been telling you this for a while now.
