Hello everyone,

I have to build a new computer for general school work and some gameplay and a lil rendering, basically an all rounder. I was thinking

MSI Mega PC 180
3000+ 400fsb AthlonXP
DUAL 512 stix
1x 200gb
1x 36gb raptor
RADEON 9800 PRO
Dell Speakers 5.1
Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse with Tilt Wheel
Logitech Keyboard
Hyudai 17" LCD
NEC DVD-RW +/-

What I want to know is will I have heat issues when I am playing games, or rendering. If so could you recommend to me maybe another SFF PC orhter then the Mega PC 180 with similar features. Or maybe a way I can still use the Mega 180 with some other cooling devices.

thanx

A link to the actual system itself would help in determing its cooling capacity. Either way, SFF's are gonna run hotter then typical ATX equivlents, thats just the nature of the beast. Many folks run the shuttle cases with full blown hardware and though they run pretty warm, they for the most part run stable and fast. No experience with MSI's SFF's personally, but Shuttles are pretty much top of game in regards to quality, selection and reliability.

In that case maybe y'all can recommend to me some good Shuttle XPCz if they are the best I like it to be feature rich but at the same time be able to handle the loads that my intended hardware will put on it

For Athlon 64, the SN95G *Note, an unkown nForce 4 model will be coming out soon*
SN95G

For the 775 socket Pentium's, the SB81P is the new cream of the crop in the new P series case
SB81P

For the older 478 socket Intels, the most popular model.
SB75G2

Since he was planning on an AthlonXP system, don't forget the excellent SN45G:

Note that the current version comes with the 250W SilenX PS.

The only problem with the SN45G is that it doesn't have SATA onboard, so you'd need a SATA PCI card. Other than that it's a very nice system. I've been using one for over a year as my main system, and it's great. My config is very similar to your planned one, but with only 1 HD and a 6800GT instead of a 9800pro. As long as you don't use a floppy drive, then you can fit 2 HDs inside the SN45G (I think that's the case for most of shuttle's XPCs)

Be warned that doing dual HDD's will make them run really warm, thus making them more prone to failure, although many folks have no problems. One thing to keep in mind for sure is DO NOT run Maxtor drives in shuttles. They run very hot and are the most unreliable drives on the planet.

Ooops, sorry, didn't see he wanted a Socket A. I bought the SN41V2B2 for my folks, put in a 2300+ Barton in it and its fast as hell.

The 9800 pro runs pretty hot in mine. I couldnt get much OC out of it without adding a few fans to the case

right now here are my temps

Board temp:
38c / 100.4f

CPU temp:
48c / 114.4f

power / aux temp
48c / 114.4f

this is after running at full load (f@h) for 4 days straight.

i am at 2.34ghz @ 1.66v

so this is all a long handed way of saying that my shuttle runs cool.. i would reccomend an sn45gv2 if you are going socket a.. and get a 35watt mobile barton instead of that 3000+.. set it to 200 x 10 and it will be equal to that 3000+.. or do 200 x 12 if you want.. i don't think any mobile barton would have a problem with that.

What program are you using to monitor your case temp?

Just trying to find some good temp-montoring freeware to dl.

i took all of those readings out of sandra.. i had m bm5 and speedfan and different points in time
but reformatted and never put them back on.. i know the temps are safe enough that i don't have to constantly monitor them in the taskbar..
