I have been going through a massive consolidation effort at my house and the next step is to replace my servers with a more robust, smaller and quiet "server".

I have my Synology DS1812+ for all my storage, so I just need room for a small sata drive to boot.
No GPU
I will not be overclocking.

Mobo: Supermicro X9SCM-F
Memory: 4x DDR3 8GB modules
CPU: Have not decided....lowest TDP...my VMs are not cpu intesive...just basic desktop & LAMP stuff.

Thoughts on a case that will look nice next to my Synology?

Do you absolutely need 32GB of ram? Reason I'm asking is if you could go down to 16gb you could go mini-itx and get an antec isk-110 vesa with an msata boot drive, 16gb of ram and low wattage xeon.

Well I could, but I dont know of any mITX boards that have out-of-band mgt/IPMI. There will be no monitor, so i need remote BIOS/Console.

As for the RAM, I already own the 4x 8GB sticks mentioned above...so if there is a good mITX board that supports ECC, then I could just build 2...which would be even better.

I am not partial to Intel or AMD...whatever fits the bill.

Out of curiosity do any of you guys know about the intel ME junk would that give you the ipkvm stuff that you are looking for? Or if you have any info on it you mind dumping a link? Also with xenserver you could in theory get by with a 8gb ssd as it does not take much room to run.

Have you considered a barebone 1u server to suit your needs like: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816110061
I have the 1156 version of this and setting the fan profile to quiet is tolerable, but you could probably swap out the 40mm fans with something a little more quiet. Then you get the ram and expansion you need in a 1u format.

Yea I have seen those rackmounts, but I am getting rid of my rack.

I have 4 rackmount servers, 2x 4u Norcos that I am replacing with a synology. As high density as stuff has become I dont need tons of servers and drives to do what I need anymore.

Definitely interested in this Intel ME stuff.
