SFF-8087 different cable for different speed?

Hey guys, I'm building out my new server, and I've got a RAID card that's capable of 6Gbit/s.

I'm buying new SFF-8087 cables to connect from it, into my SAS backplane of a norco 4220 case.

Are all SFF-8087 cables capable of this speed? Or are some only capable of 3Gbit/s?

There is no specific cables needed for SATA 6gbit/s so I don't see why you'd need different fanouts.

And those cables will be fine for the new SATA 12gbit/s that is coming next year?

backplane is the one determining speed
so if you want 6g, you need 6g backplane

According to the spec sheet, it's good for 6Gbps. The backplane contains a port multiplier I would assume, which is an active component that needs to be able to signal at the higher speed, whereas cables are passive and only need to meet the electrical specifications.

If you're connecting to a backplane, don't just buy the cheapest breakout cable you find. Get one with the SGPIO lead or whatever its called.

no lead

with lead

Why? I just ordered the cheapest I found. What is the problem with that? Norco 4224.

Sorry I mispoke, I should have said to consider buying one with the extra lead. Your backplane may or may not make use of it.

Carry on. :D

This is only true if said backplane has logic (ie a SAS expander or port multiplier). If it doesn't, it's no different than a cable (which is a good majority of them).
