i'm nowhere near finished, but i saw a great opportunity to cut apart an awesome black box and stick my mobo in it.

i have come across some roadblocks along the way though, like what to do with the hard drives and power supply. i intend to have a fully functioning machine with:

dfi lanparty nf3-ut
3200+ clawhammer
zalman cnps-7000A
geforce 6800GT
2xHD
2xOptical
floppy drive
ocz powerstream420.

i'm putting up low quality pictures for the time being to save bandwidth. when i'm done, expect to have a bunch of high rez shots up
here's what i have so far:

the unsuspecting box next to my cd burner. note the holes are already cut into the back. i went over the ugly cardboard with a black sharpie later so that it would blend better

test fitting of the 6800gt. sticks out quite nicely and has an evil dog for added effect :D
i later added a little ramp so that the intake fan can get more outside air. i haven't taken pictures yet with the video card in, because it didn't quite come out how i wanted. i'll redo it, and add it later.

i added a fan over where the chipset heatsink in to get rid of the hot air that the zalman will be blowing into the case. it also generally helps circulation and will definitly keep overall temps down

my first attempt at getting the drives into a box. looks... well.. yeah. it looks like a retarted sff with an obession for power :D
so i tried again with a nicer looking box. it has the two hard drives and powers supply. cd drives are sitting on the floor still. the back has a fan temporarily rigged up, because during initial testing, the hard drives were not getting enough airflow from my single blower. i'm hoping that the orange will contrast nicely with the black box.

what i still need to do:

get my stuff moved over from my k8n neo to the dfi
measure where the zalman will stick through the top and cut a hole.
figure out where to put my optical and floppy drives.
fix the airflow situation with the HD/power box.
TAKE PICTURES! ;)

I swear, everytime I see the box with the drives in it and the PSU on top, I laugh. This project is going to be hilarious as it develops.

heh, looks great. maybe some really small fans would fit on the side to get some sideways air flow going on

could you display the pics insted of links?, but i like the idea..... poor box though

i will once i get the real pics up. as i said, i'm very.. bandwidth limited.
i have to go to class now, but when i come back., i'll take a picture of my floor to demonstrate why you shouldn't cut cardboard on a carpet ;)

and i'm glad you guys like it :D

This is not one more cardboard box mod is it? If so....................................

yeah, it is. i wouldn't really call it a mod though, cause mod is when.. you modifty somethign. i'm not modifying, i'm creating.
though it's just a technicality. i had a decent plan for how to arrange the hd's, optical's, and psu while i was in chem, so i'll try it out later and take some pictures if it looks nice :D

edit cause i don't like double posts.

i finally figured out a good configuration for my stuff that doesn't go on the mobo, though it takes up a bit of space, i think it will work out pretty well while keeping visible clutter down.
the fan is directed to blow air across the hard drives.. it glows green. gotta get some pimp lights in there somewhere ;)

(as requested :D)

the first and second are from what will be the back side of the rig. (pay no attention to left in the name, i got confused when naming it)

most of those cables will be tucked away in the area between the cd drives and psu. i'll put sides up around it to keep the ugly wires hidden.
and now an amusing picture demontrating the strength of the stuff i used for the base. i have two layers of it, though it still flexes when picked up from the sides a little bit.

Man, that stuff holds up a leatherman's tool nicely. That should be a litmus test for case materials. Good work so far, bro.

it's the stuff that's put behind pictures in most frames, mat board.
my roommate was a photo major before he dropped out.. and he left two big boards of the stuff here. i've used up one making the case and some assorted things. it's amazingly hard to cut though, i wish i had a pair of decent snips.. though a knife gives better edges.

So what happened to the SuperLanboy (where the power, reset, sound and usb sockets came from)? :D

sadly.. the case back together now. i didn't really need the power switch for the dfi because it has power and reset switches on the board, but i couldn't get the cabling to work out right without making a huge mess, which is the opposite of what i was going for. so i figured it was just undue hazrd to my precious dfi... it's back to how it was before
so the mod end here. sorry guys!

however, i'll try to think of a more creative idea for later anyhow. ;) :D
