Severely Slow Defragmenting

So I'm "cleaning" this girl's laptop cus it has been slow, from spyware and what not. So I'm just doing a clean up. I'm defragmenting the harddrive right now, and well it's been about 20 hours, and it's only at 76 or so percent.

Specs:
Windows ME
(comp didn't say how many ghz on My Comp properties)
I did forget to turn off all the programs at the bottom right, but I did that during the defrag
The harddrive is 6-8 gb
The comp is about 5-6 years old, and assuming it has never been defragmented before

Did I do something wrong? Although I'm NEARLY at 80% I believe it will stay take another half day to finish up. Should I cancel it and take a different approach? I've seen 20gb HD defrag much much faster.

Must be severe fragmentation with a slow HD. Are you using the built-in defragger or a third party app?

Built in, what would happen if I canceled the defragmentation, would it defrag that 80% or would it just cancel everything altogether.

I believe the stuff it has already processed stays defragmented so you would not lose that 80%. If you are already that far you may as well just let it finish IMO.

Defragmenting needs a certain amount of swap space. It's very possible that there is almost no free space on a 6-8 gb drive and thus it can only adjust data in very small increments.

It has about a gig left in what I remember as a .... 6 gb harddrive?? That's a tad bit more then 10% of the harddrive, not enough space however?

1 GB free on a 6 GB drive is enough space to defrag. And if you cancel it, the drive would remain 80% defragged, it won't revert back.

But is this anywhere near normal? It seems kind of "long" haha. I've had my share of defrags, but man this one is just slowwwwwwwww.

I think it's normal. Slow HD, not much free space, and a sucky defragger = slow defrag.

Interestingly enough I had a conversation with an Executive Software dude the other day, and it turns out that they had written the defragger MS is using in their products. Back in the day they had given MS a sample defragger code which was then developed into DIskeeper 3.0. MS thought it's cool and implemented it into their OS. The Diskeeper people never intended for that version of the code to become a production version.

Be that as it may, Diskeeper is now at version 9, and 10 will be released in a couple of weeks, while the Windows built-in defragger still runs on the Diskeeper 3.0 core.

Have a look at Diskeeper, there is a 30 day fully functioning trial, it rocks.

A friend of mine had his old computer defragging for 3 days straight. When I heard how long it took, I couldnt help but bust out laughing.

aww man.... it's not even my comp.... hahaha well after the 3 days, was it significantly better in performance? Any gain at all? Or was it just a slight waste of time?

I am finally finished, and after all that hard and strenuous work, it doesn't seem like the comp is THAT much faster, it's just smoother then before.... thanks guys.

What kind of Laptop/Drive?

If there's one constant in Laptops, it's that the HD will fail eventually. If the HD in that Laptop is having sector read issues, it may be having to do a lot of re-reads, thus the ultra-slow performance.

I've seen ThinkPads that took 30 minutes plus to boot when the drives were going bad.

haha crazy. Well, it seems fairly healthy so far. SHe doesn't DL anything cus she uses 56k. I forgot to a virus scan....

My 80GB rarely takes over an hour or so to defrag. Basically I start it before class, come back in 1.5 hours and its usually done. 160GB? Maybe a bit longer, but never more than a few hours. I remember defragging my 20GB on 98SE...that took over 9 hours. What a p-o-s. Both the OS and the hard drive.

its a posability that its a bad hd....i would use a linux cd to format that way its clean then install windows
