several devices on one rail question

heya gents, so i've modded my psu to shorten cables, now I have another idea and I wanna know if its an ok thing to do,

i have 3 scsi and 2 ide drives I want to power all off one psu rail, I indent to just add molex pass through connects onto the existing rail that powers 2 devices.

so in the end with the 3 additions, the rail will have 5 molex connects


is that cool?
 
I wouldnt do that. I tried that once My HDDs didnt get enough power and were spinning well below normal speed. I thought my HDDs were dying and ended up reformating 4 times in one week because of corrupt OS files
 
we generally refer to that as a strand or lead as opposed to a rail
the word rail is generally reserved to describe the output of +3.3V, +5V, +12V1 or +12V2 (each being a seperate rail)

as far as how many devices can be on a given lead
well that depends, the longer the lead the greater the resistance, same with the thinner the wires, or number of interfaces (adapters or wyes)

I generally try to keep only three HDD on a given strand
of course its at spinnup that tyhe drives require thier full draw
(typically 1.9 > 2.3A +12V) it then drops to roughly 1\4 that once spinning and varies a bit with seeks (the armeture moving)

mixing opticals with HDDs typically spreads out the draw,
whereas all HDDs generally concentrates the draw for spinnip
and if they are in the same array (RAID) with seeks as well
